Yep, I came to the realization that it’s not any different than when someone has to take medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. In the same way, diet & exercise help, but when it doesn’t do enough, meds are usually necessary. Your brain isn’t functioning the way it’s supposed to and while diet & exercise work for many, if it’s not enough for you, that’s when you seek counseling & possibly medication.

Lexapro is good for anxiety. Not as much for depression. Libido is reduced and may put on 10-15 lbs.

I take Lexapro for anxiety/depression for years. The zombie feeling fades after a month. Gotten off and tried Wellbutrin, does not work as well although back to my adhd self when on it. I prefer Lexapro for me.

good thing about SSRIs is that they make a lot of these things dissolve away

Bottom line- listen to your doctor, not the OT! (Lol). This is 2020, don’t be scared of meds. Try what your doc recommends and if it’s not working you can try something else... found one that worked wonders for me; I won’t mention the name because it might not be the one for you- it has been mentioned in this thread already with mixed results.....

I am 48 next month. I got sober in February 2017. Prior to that I was diagnosed with ASD/Apsperger's Syndrome. I have taken anti depressant my entire life. I have taken lamectil and prozac for the last 4 years and just added wellbutrin. Please email me if you have other questions, as I may not see this thread again. my email is marc@mmtlegal.com There is nothing to be scared of if you are informed and have a good psychiatrist. It sounds like you do.

Avoid Wellbutrin.

The worst part for me was my psychiatrist having to "experiment" with different drugs until we found one that worked, which we never did. I ended up lying to her and my wife for a year, telling them that the 10th med she tried was working when it never did. This year we tried a natural medication that changed my life. The voices seem to quiet considerably.
Also, go get another opinion. I was originally diagnosed with extreme anxiety disorder and OCD. Come to find out that is incorrect and I am working with a Dr on testing for a diagnosis that I feel at peace with. It answers every single question that wasn't answered with the original diagnosis.
If you decide to start with the anti-depressants, TAKE THEM AS PRESCRIBED. I can't begin to tell you the hell that is waves of "brain shocks" thinking you can just stop taking them.
Good luck and keep your head up. I've struggled with my condition for as long as I can remember and at 42 years old, I finally feel like there is genuine hope.
Also, go to church.

Honestly, hearing stories from a lot of you who are on these things sounds scary AF.
They really cannot be good for you in the scheme of things.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. You are not yourself when you are depressed. The meds are supposed to let your real self rise to the surface.

My experience is not related to depression, but anxiety. Still take an SSRI (sertraline/zoloft).
I think my therapist said it best. People will notice a slight change long before you do and it may just be slight changes over months. Like my wife would notice that I didn't snap over stupid things in several months. I dont feel any different, until I dont take them. Don't realize the change even happened until its gone.
Now the bad things. Libido went down, but then normalized. Still down, but not as bad as the first 2 months. Not all meds and doses work the same for everyone. Depression is a different brain chemistry than anxiety I would imagine so not sure if my experience correlates at all. And going off cold turkey sucks. I always forget to take them on vacation just due to change in my daily routine. If I go more than one day, I feel awful. Can't sleep, irritable, skin crawls, randomly get this shock feeling in my brain. You have to ween off of them.

Brother if things are as bad as you say they are, what do you have to lose? It is absolutely worth trying.
I have taken them and while I feel they have dulled my emotions some, though not significantly, it is a million times better than constantly feeling soul crushing negative emotions all the time.
Best of luck man and I truly hope you get the help and relief you're looking for.

For those that have dulled emotions, how did you find your particular med/dose? I got lucky and found one that works well with me on the first try, but still took probably 6-8 months to dial in the correct dose. Started out super low to ensure there was no adverse reaction and increased until I felt comfortable, but not in that zombie state.

I just don’t want to feel so overwhelmed by everything and hate myself so much, I don’t want to be constantly hearing voices in my head telling me to kill myself, to give up
If you're having these thoughts, medication may SAVE your life AND give you the quality of life you deserve.
Like some have mentioned, antidepressants can take a bit of trial and error, so you have to be patient.
In the meantime, there are few things that can also help.
-First thing each morning, write down something that you like about yourself and make your bed. Create a list. It starts your day with a positive note and with an accomplishment; you can build on that momemtum.
-Do one thing each day that gives you joy. Doesn't matter what it is or how small.
-Do one kind thing for someone else each day. Doesn't matter what it is or how small. Compliments are an easy way to start.
-Before you go to bed, write down one thing you are thankful for. Create a list.
-Get outside in the sunlight as much as possible. Exercise as much as possible, even if its just a walk in your neighborhood.
You are stronger than you think. You can do this brother!

They didn’t work for me but I was also dealing with post partum depression. The only that worked was getting an IV infusion for 60 hours of a drug called Zulresso made just for post partum issues. BUT also talking to a good therapist helped me a lot when medicine was not giving me any relief.
