i did this in Texas a few years ago. Only problem is the TX dealer sent the paperwork to the wrong LA DMV office.They sent it back to the TX dealer. This went on for 2 round trips and several weeks. By the time i finally tracked it down, i got hit with penalties and interest for being late with the LA registration.

Bought one in Dallas. Did all the negotiating over email and then settled on a price and arranged to come by the next day. When I arrived the guy told me another rep almost 'accidentally' sold the vehicle to somebody else that morning - it was a young guy so either scare tactics or he didn't communicate it with other sales reps. Would have been a terrible waste of time to get there and the car being gone.
Anyways, that was the only negative from my experience, everything else was smooth and quick. The dealership approximated the LA taxes and handled it for me. He was slightly off so I had to pay the difference (around $100) at the LA DMV when I went for my plate.

So the dealership sent the paperwork and paid the Louisiana TT&L for you to a DMV of your choosing?

When I bought mine in mobile the dealership sent a packet to my house and I brought that to the dmv. Dont think Id want that going straight to the dmv.

Yea, good point. I'd be better off going write a check myself rather than risk the DMV screwing it all up.

Bought a truck two weeks ago in Houston. Title companies in Laffy, Nola, and BR can handle the registration for you for $50. Saved a good bit on the truck buying in Htown. Ran into two other people from La getting vehicles. We all agreed dealers here don't work with you. Less competition I assume.
Assume 10% of sale price for taxes and you'll be fine.

I was in Houston in 2007 business and had some time to waste and was in the market for a truck. My business partner drove by a dealer to buy a used corvette. I saw a new 2007 F150 4x4 with all the options I wanted down to the color of the truck.
I called my lender I was working with in Louisiana and they walked me through the process. They worked with the Texas dealer to get the paperwork done. It did not take long maybe 1 hour after I first called my lender to complete the paperwork I was done. The lender even applied for my Louisiana plate and I picked it up from my lender around 20 days after the sale.
It was smooth and my taxes were based on my tax rate in the parish I lived in at the time.

I don't believe this to be the case. I think like with any business, whoever has the purchase power to buy more inventory will get it at a discounted price. If you look at Everett GMC and Laura GMC, the amount of inventory they have on their lot is outrageous. Right now, Everett has 613 new Sierra 1500's on their lot and 220 Sierra 2500's. My local GMC dealer in Biloxi has 58 and 12, respectively. My salesman at Everett told me that as of last Friday, they had sold 673 vehicles in December and their goal was 1,000.

Live in SC, bought my last two cars in NC (Impala and a Camaro)
I never had any issues. No hidden taxes/fees as far as I'm aware. Both dealers( Charlotte and Raleigh) took care of registration fees for me. I was never mailed my registration for the Camaro, but I did get it printed at the DMV for 1 dollar. That could be because I kept the tag from the Impala on the Camaro.
Both good experiences and will continue to buy in NC from now on.

Why not just see if you can get a local dealer to match their offer? I just bought a new F-150 and had the dealership beat an incredible price I had in writing from a dealer in Mobile. They took over $13k off.

There's extremely few of what I'm looking for locally. There aren't a whole lot of base-model brand new 2016 trucks in Louisiana.

To avoid taxes I was told by several people the following: Go online an open an LLC business in the state of Montana. Purchase the vehicle and you avoid sales tax. Also you don't have to get an inspection sticker every year in Montana from what I was told. I've noticed several trucks around here with Montana plates after I was told this.

They know the drill. I've bought a couple of cars in TX, and the TX dealer handled all the paperwork. I paid them the LA tax amount, and they dealt with DMV. Got my plates in the mail. Some may do it other ways.
I've also used the TX price to get a local dealer to match it. I told them that I had a certain price from TX that I was going to buy unless they matched. Promised if they matched, I'd come get it right then. One time they bit. Other times not.

i told them where to send it when I purchased the vehicle. They sent it to the DMV nearest my house which I didn't know existed. That DMV didn't handle registrations and sent it back to Tx TWICE. Third time they sent it where I told them to send it, but I was past the deadline and had to pay late fees.
