I was working in BR for three months and during that time Traction was having team selection You would think it was like life and death; the drama the nonstop gossiping among the women talking about CHILDREN playing fricking BASEBALL

Had same experience, was in a fast food place sitting next to 4 guys dressed in coaches garb. They were discussing the team, what players the wanted in to stay in particular positions the next season, various strategies for team development, it was serious as death. I assumed they were from a local college, then a bunch of what looked like 7 and 8 year olds all in baseball uniforms ran up to their table, and I realized they were travel-ball coaches.

I used to play for the Plank Road Pirates. The names on the team were a little bit different

Travel ball is a status symbol for the parents. Plus they aren't getting the best players in the area, they are getting the ones that can afford it.

What I do not think gets talked about enough here is how small most college athletic scholarships are for sports other than football and basketball. Value was discussed earlier in the thread, wheres the value in spending $10000 in the hope of getting a small college scholarship?

That and the time required to play a sport in college can significantly affect academic performance. Unlike academic scholarships where the moneys is provided simply for being a student and maintaining a specific gpa, a athletic scholarship is equivalent to being given a job. If a parent wants to help fund little Johnny’s college education use the money that would be spent on travel ball to send him to math/computer camps.

I don’t want a nerd kid. You got what you wanted, but not everyone wants that. I went to college for 8 years studying physics and engineering and working in labs...yea I’ve always had good jobs, but frick all that...unless he wants to. Wife studied French Lit, and makes more than I do. I want him to be a happy, healthy communicator who can live life outside of a cubical.

For boys maybe. There are plenty of full scholarships for girls out there thanks to Title IX. There are also a lot of partial scholarships as well. My daughter has gotten really good at tennis and a couple of coaches have told us she has a good shot at a scholarship if she sticks with it. I don't put any stock in that though. Besides, if she keeps on her current track she'll have plenty of academic scholarship offers.
