Former USA Volleyball coach Rick Butler was accused of sexually abusing “no fewer than six underage teen girls” while his wife attempted to silence the victims, a new lawsuit alleges.

Rick Butler, who founded Sports Performance Volleyball, a sports club based in Aurora, Illinois, was named in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that alleged he “used his position” to abuse the underage girls in the 1980s, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Butler, who was considered one of the “most powerful coaches in youth volleyball,” is also accused of impregnating one of his victims.

I'm sure there's something going on but i highly doubt he's raped hundreds of times.

It's not beyond belief. It says no less than 6, meaning there might be more.

Perfect place for predators to do their thing. Parents these days will send there children off to these national camps for months at a time hoping they make it to the highest levels of their sport. These guys have little in the way of preventing them from carrying out such crimes.

Also, I don't think he was ever associated with USA volleyball at the Olympic level.

When they say USAV they mean the Junior Olympics/club volleyball.

Sports Performance is one of the most highly regarded clubs in the country for youth volleyball.

Statutory rape isn't sexual abuse?

I just think they would say accused of having sex with minors if that were the case. The language used implies it was forcible, at least IMO.

When will people stop allowing themselves to be abused sexually to advance their careers.

These allegations have been circling him for decades. Or are these brand new accusers?

There's a very well respected female coach in Florida who has levied claims that Butler raped her while she was a player for him.

quote:

Sexual abuse allegations against Butler came to light in 1995. He was expelled from USA Volleyball following the claim but he was allowed to return five years later. In January, USA Volleyball announced they banned Butler for life due to the “allegations of misconduct and abuse against Mr. Butler from a number of individuals, including several former players.” He has also been banned by Amateur Athletic Union and Junior Volleyball Association. The lawsuit also noted Butler has a “special relationship with Michigan State University.” The university recently came under scrutiny for employing disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was ordered to serve decades in prison for molesting athletes. Butler “has never been charged with a crime” but his accusers said “the relevant statutes of limitations had expired before they came forward,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

I didn't read this article, but this story has been percolating for years.

He used his influence to coerce them to sleep with him.

When will people stop being allowed to sexually abuse those who they hold power over?

USA Volleyball investigated and then dropped it due to a lack of evidence.

USAV banned him recently as did AAU.

This gained new traction when the #metoo movement took hold.
