We got charged like $10 for the gauze when I went it to get stitches once. It was probably 1 foot of gauze, maybe worth 10 cents.

Just how it works.

The more gov gets involved the worse it will be. Hospitals are trying to make money just like every other business. Yes, your so called "not for profits" make more profit than the "for profits." And they can afford to waste huge amounts of money because they don't have to pay property taxes. What you have to look at is the bottom line. How much did this hospital make in profit last year? I'll bet its not much at all. Why? Because medicare, medicaid, and insurance have pre-determined rates, which are substantially less than what they charge. So, they charge ten dollars for an aspirin. They could charge .05 for it, but the 9.95 difference would have to be switched to another charge to make up for it.

I had a bloodhound run into and impale herself on a hayspear 2 weeks ago, end result was a puctured lung sac and loss of a circular section of hair/skin/outer fat ~12 inches in diameter. She required 2 seperate surgeries, one to repair the sac(which also needed x-rays for diagnosis), the other to remove damaged tissue and suture, each requiring Anesthesia. She's staying at the vet's clinic for 4 weeks so they can carefully monitor/care & rewrap the wounds ad-hoc as she requires around the clock supervision & any rolling/rapid movement can re-open the sutures/impede the healing. The total charges are $4000. Just think what a hospital would bill for similar services

True. Insurance paid about 31% of it.

It's a stupid perverse game of cat and mouse between the hospital and the insurance company

My parent's neighbor was a surgeon, lived in a great neighborhood best house on the block. Told my dad that his monthly malpractice insurance was more than his mortgage payments.

from my personal experience dealing with doctors/hospitals (very anecdotal, not a doctor or work in healthcare) is they have to do something pretty horrible to get found guilty of malpractice. They also have a team of lawyers ready to defend them.

I saw mine for back surgery. I think it was 97,000 but my memory is getting worse.

It’s criminal what they charge

It’s a product of the hospitals working with the insurance companies. The hospitals know the insurance will only pay a fraction of the “sticker price,” but the sticker price is so high to make people believe they have to have insurance or they will be saddled with crippling debt.

All made legal by our wonderful government. A complete antithesis of the concept of a free market.

We still have the itemized bill for the delivery of our first child on Nov 26, 1977. The most memorable was $25.00 for the shaving kit, a disposable razor, small sample type can of shaving cream and a small plastic container for water.

Had a few surgeries and cancer treatments years back, and my next BCBS statement had about 700k worth of charges.

Doesn’t matter what they charge. Insurances have allowables based on contracts and the rest is written off. Don’t have insurance, you are either screwed or you negotiate. You took the risk not to have insurance.
