Wonder what Robin regretted more, charging him in the first place or dropping his helmet first.

What I have always loved about this is that when Ventura charges, he pulls up about 3/4 of the way there and slows down. This is the moment he realizes that keeping it real just went wrong and the old man is just waiting on him.

There wasn't much that Nolan Ryan wasn't game for. Good ole boys from Texas don't back down.

Ryan was about 40 when this happened, but he was a cowboy, as well as a pitcher. He owned a ranch in TX, and was a real cattle wrestling cowboy with old man strength.

UNR (University of Nolan Ryan) was meeting in class that day, no virtual learning.

Ryan reminds me of Dale Earnhardt. Doesn't say much, carries himself a certain way and takes care of business.

An American man.

It was hands on learning.

Try 46. The old guy whipped that little boy's arse. I remembered this well. My Daddy was Nolan's age. I was a few years younger than Ventura. My father was a farmer and former semi-pro baseball player who kept himself in great shape. Told me if I ever feel froggy remember what Nolan did to Ventura.

Absolute state of being a good baseball player, with a long career, only to be remembered as the guy that got beat up by an old man.

ETA: give me his career earnings, and I’d find a way to manage.

And a destroyed ankle sliding into home plate.

On a lighter note, my Pops would be 94 years-old today except he’s been busy being dead for a while.
