Actually spent some time on a job up in Beaver Dam last year. I really enjoyed my time there. Very quaint and clean. Saw several deer always chillin’ out on some crops.

It’s a tiny portion of a corner of the state though. Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are all so much better

The northwest corner. Basically Jo Daviess County.

Been though that state often in my lifetime on the ground.
Everybody lives in the Chicago MSA (Gary, IN included)
Dang near a desert outside of that area.
Word to the wise, fill your tank in Illinois when you can

why do people outside of Chicago live in Illinois near the border? What's the difference between these places and the rural communities just across the border in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Tennessee, etc.?
They don't live in IA, MO, or TN because there are tons of large corporations and millions of jobs in that area around Chicago. So people have to be there. Many people do live just across the border in Indiana, though you have East Chicago and Gary over there which no employed productive citizen would want to deal with daily. Fewer people live just across the border in WI because the property taxes are super high there as well so you're not avoiding anything. Also, Metra is great but it only goes so far out from the city.

South side Chicago is horrible.
Used to live in Naperville years ago. It was pretty nice.

Wonder where Chicago is on that map.

Not uncommon in Illinois in my experience.
If you ever drive IND to STL make sure to get gas and have some in the trunk before entering Illinois from either direction.

I'm not talking about the Chicago suburbs, I'm talking about southern Illinois, or at least the non-East St. Louis part. Why stay there?

Bc that’s where all their stuff is

yeah, this board is full of more urban and transient people. the idea of just packing up and moving from land that your family has owned for many generations, or at least the area your family has lived in for generations, doesn't compute for a huge portion of this country.

You are getting downvoted, but this is true.

I'd like to see this graphic for other states. Going to check out @MrPecners. Gotta type in the search bar carefully.
Oregon and Washington would look very similar to Illinois. Tennessee would look interesting due to Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Clarksville and Lynchburg being spread out throughout such a long state.
