So are you suggesting that a guy who takes a solo trip once in a blue moon doesn't love his family? Seriously?

Drove out to Big Bend solo a couple of years ago. Wife hates long car rides and wanted none of it. Hiked and relaxed and saw some cool stuff. Came back rejuvenated.

If a loved one were to die, I think the last thing I would be regretting was taking that trip.

Why not just tell the truth and enjoy it even more?
The deceit would really bother me - either way.

I did an annual Destin trip for the fishing rodeo. It was definitely a ME trip.

I had to be in Boston for work and took and extra day to see a Red Sox game. Told the wife about it, no reason to lie about it, unless you are looking to soon be divorced.

Heck no.

I prefer 2-3 vacations a year, but my wife likes 5-6 vacations a year so we compromise. I travel enough with that crap that if it's up to me, I'm hanging out on my farm and fishing Lake Texoma.

I took a trip to southern Colorado for a week to work on repairing old narrow gauge railroad freight cars. Volunteer work on historic transportation equipment.

My wife at the time became so angry and jealous that she divorced me.

Yes, but I tell my wife because I'm not a POS. It's usually just a few days up at our lake house by myself. Do some fishing. Do some hiking. Cook a giant steak for just me. Play music real loud. Drink beer and play on the golf simulator.

My wife and I both believe it's important to get away from kids and work for a bit. She's a social creature, so she goes with friends. I'm not, so I go alone.

Take a few PTO days and tell the wife you have a meeting/workshop to go to and just fly off to some random city on your own.

Not to cheat or do anything scandalous. Just relax in the hotel, sleep until you wake up, hit the hotel gym and breakfast bar. Then sleep some more. Maybe go exploring or walk around. Basically find yourself again. Recharge…

What you say OT? Ever take a YOU retreat?

Imagine feeling like you have to lie to your spouse in order to get some time to yourself

No, I'm not that important. Nor would I be so selfish to spend that kind of money on myself.
