Very cool story bro
Not really. Destroyed our family and set off a series of events that caused everyone alot of pain over the next 20 years.

Twice.
One was a 20yr old drunk Mexican about 10 miles outside of Odessa, TX. He was shite faced and couldn't remember where his car was. He told me he was a drug dealer. I brought him home and he gave me $200.
Another was a girl walking home. Drove her home 5 miles away. She thanked me and I left.

Was on my way to Tiger Stadium the last time we hosted Tennessee. I started to pull onto I-10 and saw a guy with a sign that said “Tennessee” obviously indicating he wanted a ride to Tennessee or someone to get him close. I rolled down the window and yelled “Vols suck. Geaux Tigers!” and kept driving

I picked up one once when I was in my early 20’s. It was this old man and he was carrying his groceries down bluebonnet. I will never forget it because when he looked at me he had these crystal clear blue eyes. He spoke no English but was able to explain to me where he loved (way over near LSU). This old man was either beginning to have dementia and was lost or I swear this guy may have been an angel.
There was something about him that felt very different when he was in the car.

Some buddies and I were staying near the beach in Ft. Lauderdale for spring break in the 80's. We caught a ride to a bar that was about 5 miles away. By 2 am we had all struck out and needed to get back to our fleabag motel, but our ride had already left. So we started walking. After a couple miles a convertible full of hot college age girls passes us up going the other way. The car slows down and whips a U-turn, passes us and pulls over about 20 yards ahead of us. One of the girls yells "You guys tired of walking??" We all look at each other giddy at our good fortune..it was like a movie fantasy come true. We start jogging to the car. Just then another one yells "Then try running ya' losers!" as the car sped off into the night kicking up gravel onto us.
I was kind of mad but really more impressed with how skillfully they toyed with us.

I did quite a few times in the 70's when it was a popular way to get around, but by the end of that decade I had pretty much stopped with being married, having a kid and not wanting to chance a bad encounter.
The last time I picked someone up was in the mid 80's when I was heading to work before sunup one morning and saw a relatively young gal on the side of the road hitchhiking. Didn't take me long to realize she was a drug addict looking to get a ride to pick up her fix when she told me where she was headed.
I was driving up Chef Hwy. heading toward the CBD and she asked if I could bring her to a place on Louisa St. near the Desire Projects------NOT NO, BUT HELL NO and I dropped her off at Chef and Louisa and continued on.
That did it for me-----no more damsels in distress, frick em', figure it out for yourself.

Hitchhiked once. Going to Walkons after Arkansas game. Parked by field house but traffic was a mess as usual. Dude let us ride in the bed of his truck on Nicholson till we got there and hopped out.

Was driving in Iowa one winter. It was single digit temps with -20° wind chills. I saw a guy walking on the shoulder of the interstate wearing an uninsulated denim jacket. I picked him up and gave him a ride to the nearest town. He was a nice guy and very grateful. He said he was trying to get to the next town to wait somewhere warm for a friend to pick him up. I never regretted that decision.

I did. When I had my truck back in the late eighties, early nineties. I always made them ride in the bed. Never had any issues.
I wouldn't pick anyone up today.

Yeah, the 70s were the peak hitching years. At least its "hippie" and "Jesus freak" movements provided the peak of universal American friendship, trust of others, and charitable giving.
My short sweet hitching story:
I'd hitch a ride to my hospital groundskeeper job at about 7:30am on a fairly major thoroughfare. At one particular traffic light one of the hospital uniformed guards would often pick me up, sipping his version of "breakfast of champions" through a straw. Red faced and glassy-eyed. It was an orange ingeniously impregnated with vodka. I guess he figured the orange would mask the Gilbey's smell on his breath.
Had a match been lit that whole car cabin would have been a fireball.

I worked construction all of my growing up life(my dad was a GC,) when we were having a big concrete pour we'd sometimes have to pick up extra laborers/finishers, one summer we had a pretty big job at Ft. Polk and I had to pick up the concrete guys and drive them down, same thing about lighting a match

I picked up hitch hikers up until I got a wife and then kids. Finally my wife told me enough times that I was an idiot.
Last time I picked up a hitchhiker was probably 4 years ago. But I had become very selective on the type of characters I’d pick up and it had to be a special circumstance like it was raining and they were really old or something.
I’ve always viewed it as I could use all the good deed blessings as I could get.
Back in the early 2000s me and my cousin actually got detained and questioned because of a hitchhiker I picked up and was off his meds and on meth or both. The hitchhiker tried to stab me and steal my truck when I went to drop him off at his destination.
I learned my lesson for a couple years but went back to picking up hitchhikers

The last time I picked up a hitchhiker, he was telling me about his business idea, 7 minute abs. He was sure that he was going to make millions with it.
He became very irate when I questioned what would happen if someone created 6 minute abs.
I wonder what happened to him, he seemed like an ok guy.

Ha! 4:30am?
Cars were just bars on wheels back then. Or smoking lounges. Nobody flinched. Nobody judged. Almost everybody partook.
Those concrete baws -- would they also crack open the bottles on the way home?

I did once after drinking and not wanting to drive. Girl I was with and I caught a ride with a "stranger" to our place 50 miles away.
Unfortunately out of tens of thousands of possible people, he knew my Girls father and worked for him, and they were a gossipy, judgy people.

they tried to be discrete about it on the way down, and the job site was out in the boonies, they probably did, just don't know where they hid it, and believe me, I wanted a couple of cold ones after working all day pouring concrete in that summer heat, I will say that those baws worked their asses off out there when the trucks started pouring it out

Drove a semi for 44 years, so yes I've picked up hitch hikers. Mostly pre 1990, got older and wiser. I've had good and bad experiences. One I remember.
I was traveling west on I20, leaving South Carolina entering Georgia. I stopped near the state line at a favorite mom and pop truckstop I loved. As I headed back out on the road, coming down the on ramp, I noticed an elderly man walking with his thumb out. He appeared to be very clean and orderly and seemed out of place. Well I pulled over, he climbed in, said he was needing to get to Atlanta. As we rode along, he told me he was broke and was not well and trying to get to the VA hospital in Atlanta. Nice old guy, grandfather type. I got him to a truckstop in Atlanta, bought him a meal and gave him 20 bucks for a cab ride to the VA. Hope he made it.
