Ever heard the story of the 26th North Carolina at Gettysburg?

They were the largest regiment in Robert E. Lee's entire army, most having never seen combat. But on July 1, 1863, the first day of the battle, they matched wits with the 24th Michigan (one of the best units in the Union army) in the Herbst Woods. The 26th North Carolina brought 800 men into the fight. In 45 minutes, after finally forcing the 24th Michigan to grudgingly fallback to Seminary Ridge, only 212 North Carolina men remained. A further 120 men were killed, wounded, or captured in Pickett's Charge two days later. The regiment retreated with the Confederate army with only 90 men remaining from the original 800.
More North Carolinians fell at the Battle of Gettysburg than did men from any other state.

North Carolina had the most casualties of any southern state in the war I believe.
Also, this just goes to show that the average confederate soldier was better.

No, but I’m Gen X...is this going to hurt my mental health?

And NC didn't even want to secede in the first place. They were basically forced to because they were surrounded by CSA territory.

Slavery was rare relative to other states and locked into a couple areas.
That fight between the 24th MI and 26th NC is legendary. There are hour plus YouTube movies from Gettysburg park rangers talking about both the actual people on both sides and the impact that fight had on towns due to the high casualty rate as well as the engagement itself.
Not for everyone, but that or Ken Burns Civil War on Gettysburg should be required viewing for the entire country in these politically charged times. There was nothing glamorous or positive about the civil war. Families and cities were crushed and both regions were set back by decades in many ways.

Ken Burn’s civil war documentary is pro-Yankee propaganda piece. It’s garbage.

If only the north hadn't invaded

I’m literally watching the second episode of Ken Burn documentary. Doesn’t seem too slanted yet.

State of North Carolina actually bought a small track of land at Gettysburg and was first CS to have a monument there. Actually if you stand in the area you are considered to be in the State of North Carolina.
We did Gettysburg tour a couple years ago. Just surreal when you stand at location of Pickett's Charge and realize how men just marched to their death.
If you ever do Gettysburg, pay for the private tour by the park rangers. They actually drive your vehicle while you sit back and enjoy the tour. It was awesome.

My 3x grand father died at gettysburg as a member of the 26th NC, Amos Pigg company b the Waxhaw Jackson Guard. He joined on August 17, 1861 and died at Gettysburg, it was either July 1, or during Pickett's Charge, as the 26tgs casualty log just lists his death on July 1 or July 3.

Pickett never forgave Lee for ordering that charge.
"That old man slaughtered my division."

And was considerably more reluctant for war than its neighbors. As my history professor said, NC being sandwiched between VA and SC was like two hotheads telling their friend, "let's you and him fight."

Ummm....anything that heavily relies on Shelby Foote isn't "pro-Yankee propaganda".

It's not a story the Jedi would tell you.

Reality for many of those units was that men would be wounded on day one and killed on day three. When you are talking about 50%+ casualties in a unit which are usually heavily geared towards the officers you sometimes end up without anyone who can tell the story afterwards.
Happened to one of my relatives at Stones River. Was wounded on day one, returned to the fight and and was wounded to the point of permanent disability a day or so later. Those hospitals weren't anyplace I would want to be either especially after a big fight. Must've looked like hell on earth.
