Guy I know from high school goes to restaurants with a legal pad and pretends to take notes the entire time he’s eating. He usually gets stuff comp’d this way.
The only downside is having to eat alone and not ordering drinks with the meal.

Little known fact, the unknown food critic (Ian McNulty) got his foot in the door with WWL the very same way.

That’s not how good critics work. Someone I know is a professional food critic for a rather large paper and they take at least 4-6 people with them and he pays for his food through corporate credit cards.
So what this guy does is he will take 4-5 coworkers at the paper out for lunch. He tells them they can order mostly what they want but he will insist that they order some things. And he gets to have a bite or two off everyone’s plate. He will do this 3-4 times per establishment so he can get a feel for it over time.

Your lack of correct punctuation says otherwise...
