Saw my parents yesterday for the second time since this started. Mom is def. high risk, but we needed to see her and I know she's dying to see her grandkids.

I set up two tables outside. Scrubbed them down well and used caution while cooking and serving food. We set at separate tables, but it was still nice to be able to visit with them.

Then they legit shouldn't wear them.

It's just like vaccinations. Some people can't get vaccinated, due to age, health, etc. But if enough people get vaccinated, it helps protect even though who aren't.

If everyone who can wear a mask wears a mask, then the community will be far safer, and those who can't wear masks (likely because they already have respiratory issues) will be safer as well.

Again, if you are at risk or scared, stay home. Make people who come to see you wear mask and gloves and do all that you need to so you can feel safe.

How long do you suggest people have to wear a mask? Four weeks? Eight weeks?

The strawman you're creating is silly. I'm in my early to mid 30's in near perfect health. I'm not afraid of the virus. But there are plenty of people who are at risk, so I think people who "proudly" go out without a mask are no different than someone who proudly goes to the grocery store to pick out produce after taking a shite and not washing their hands. It's just common courtesy.

The total fatality rate for people over 70 in Louisiana is 2.5% and over half these people were in nursing homes and would not be considered healthy. This is based on the IHME estimated infection rate for Louisiana. According to the CDC 75 year old men have an 80% ten year mortality rate and 75 year old women have a 60% ten year mortality rate. For most people, quality of life declines with age.

Totally missed my point . I wasn’t arguing with the post . Lighten up Francis

This.

There are reasonable precautions and reasonable levels of risk aversion and avoidance we can take on a daily basis, but this lockdown of the last two months can barely even be considered living.

These cloth masks that are reused and not properly replaced? Nah. It's more symbolic.

The effectiveness of currently used masks are only as effective as the "expert" you trust. Because even professionals disagree.

Have you ever pissed off of something really high? You notice how your piss stream starts off tight, then fragments, and ultimately turns into a mist? If you pissed into a piece of cloth, that wouldn't happen. Would some still get through? Sure. But it would drop the amount dramatically.

That's what masks do with the liquid droplets that come out of your mouth/nose when you breathe or speak.

You could still visit with them outside and at a little distance if you and they would like to do so.

Which is fine. Reasonable people can disagree. With that said, it's more likely to help than hurt, and the burden on people is super low, so I don't see why we don't do it, just in case.

Now, explain the people who are so proud not to wear a mask that they consider it a form of protest.

Because it's pointless to do so. Next question.

My dad is 74 and my mom will be 70 this summer. I’ve only seen them a few times since this all started, social distancing of course. However I want to go see them today but not sure if I should since they are both in the high risk categories.

What’s everyone else doing?

My mom asked us over and gave us all hugs. She's done with all of this.

I don't know of anyone who considers it protest. Most consider it non conformity because they doubt the overall effectiveness, and hate masks.

You’re at your Mom’s house on Mother’s Day with your family and you’re posting here.

I’d pay heavy to be able to do the same with mine today.

And it’d take about a day before I started posting again.
