How long do you plan on being away after the storm hits? Will you try and return immediately if it passes through and doesn't hover over like Harvey did? If you don't plan on being gone long, you can probably keep power on. However, if around a week or longer, I'd probably turn off power and just remove (probably give away) anything in my fridge that will go bad and throw away things that will spoil that I can't give away.

I would try to take any small valuables (jewelry type things) with me in case it gets bad and people you don't know are going through neighborhoods. All the bigger things of value that I can't bring with me, I'd move at least 6 feet high, if you're worried about the flooding. Try to put them on countertops or something besides a dresser drawer in case it does flood and things get moved around by water.

Also, I would do small things like raise up blinds, try and keep all your clothes higher up as well because if you're worried about the flooding, clothes are something that's usually forgot about.

Leave power ON.

Downside of that is minimal.

Good luck, KW ain't skeered.

If it ends up bare limestone, it'll be back in a decade.

Good luck, smart move to evacuate. And early.

Make sure you take important documents (birth certificates, etc) with you. Good luck!

Since you did not mention it, do you have gas heating or stove?

When you empty the frig, tape the door open.

Take Pictures of every room, all four walls, as well as exterior shots.

Take the pictures with you.

Get out early. Traffic will blow. Emptying the fridge and freezer is a good idea. That smell upon return to a flooded house. Real nasty.

Yes, I would shut off the main breaker if you are leaving. If you do have damage and the power comes on you don't have to worry about it.

Clean the fridge out. If you are lucky and get no damage then you got a clean fridge without rotten food sitting in it.

Take time stamped photos of everything you can before. This will help with your claim

All helpful ideas.
What's the advantage to leaving a bare empty refridge open though? It's gonna be clean and unplugged.

Moisture. As the temp warms in the fridge there will be condensation. If you leave the door open, it can dry out and you avoid
mold/mildew and funky smells.

Good luck guys, stay safe.

If loading up your car, I always pack irreplaceable Christmas ornaments, pictures/keepsakes from kids schools, yearbooks, and any absolute favorite clothing prices and toys of my kids.

Don't put valuables on top of air mattresses, buckets or anything that would float. Whatever is floating will tip over.
