Most likely evacuating. I was gonna turn off the power and the generator (including a pool) because we expect flooding. I was throw away anything that's perishable and leave the power off.
Thoughts? If we take in water which I expect wouldn't it be better to have everything off?

Flip the main breaker to your house, empty out the fridge, pack stuff into the attic, get out of town for a few days/weeks.

ETA: Not sure how this would work for a Hurricane, but for the floods last year in BR, the neighbors used huge tarps and put their sofas and tables inside and folded the edges up. Sort of a couch taco, if you will. Might be worth looking into. They just nailed the edges against the wall about 8' up and everything stayed bone dry.

Turn everything off. Maybe place furniture you'd like to keep on second floor/ attic that you want to salvage.

Get valuables a few feet off ground.

Someone said mattresses float. If so you can put shite on them.

Why are you evacuating? Is this for Irma? If so, a little premature evacuation huh?

Don't evacuate until Peej gives you his input.

I agree with this. Take the battery out of the generator so it doesn't short out. Good luck and keep your family safe.

We live in Key West. We have flood insurance. We are putting everything of value up away from water.
The big question is if we should leave the power on. If I was here I'd turn it off once the water started coming in. I'm gonna take the advice given and turn off main breaker and the generac as well. The pool and fridge can live without being run for a while.
Thanks for the info.

Why would you? Empty the fridge and then you don't even have to worry about it.

good idea about the battery. It's 5 feet off the ground but, worth taking out.
Thanks.

A few things I wish I thought of before our flood:
Pick the blinds up
Put my lawnmower on a trailer (raise it up a bit)
Nightstands and small tables float and flip shite off them
EMPTY FRIDGE
