Don’t think the average MPG is at 30 though.

Not sure about others but I used 30mpg b/c it makes the math easy to do in my head.

the article gives the average amount of gas tax paid by Texans at just $88 per year.

quote:

the average Texas driver burned through ~55 million BTUs of motor gasoline in 2018, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That’s equal to about 440 gallons of gas. At $0.20 per gallon, the standard car owner in Texas is paying just $88 per year in gas taxes

$200 is equivalent to 1,000 gallons of gas tax a year. 83 gallons of gas per month doesn’t seem all that punitive.

Average driver in Texas uses less than half of that (440 gallons) per year so yeah it's absolutely punitive.

I’m betting many states follow this action and then effectively double down on their taxation by legislating fees to be added/collected from public chargers. And it really wouldn’t surprise me to eventually see fees added to home electricity bills for those with chargers installed.

As a conservative I hate taxation and this is just a tax. I am not a fan of all the EV hype and can't see myself ever owning one, but I do not support a tax, which I agree is punitive

But do you support a taxation which is currently selectively applied to only those driving ICE vehicles? Fairness demands EV’s start contributing in some fashion.

Well regardless of whether or not you hate it, you do pay gasoline taxes which I don't on my Lightning. I'm not going to get into what the gas tax or the new EV tax pays for. But it pays for something. Anyway, trust Texas. The right people are in charge.

Not sure where you got that number.

According to the EIA Texas uses about 38.2 million gallons of gas a day with around 23.7 million licensed drivers that would be almost 600 gallons a year. That’s an across the board average. Take out the blue hairs who likely drive way less and then also take into account electric vehicle drivers are younger and more mobile in general and I think it’s about right.

I think most people average around 10-12k miles per year driving.

In South Carolina I think the fee is an extra $250 for an EV. State not getting gas taxes from them but they put the same wear and tear on the road.
Not when they’re charging for hours on end…

Texans on average are 16,171 miles per year.

At around a 20 mph average that’s 800 gallons of fuel a year. Again, averages that would need to be adjusted for age and demographics of electric car drivers which puts it pretty close to the 1000 gallon mark.

Cheering on more taxes because of "fairness" is lame. Kudos to anyone who can skirt gov theft.

Fair?

You sound like a liberal

Taxation is bad, just because it levied against those you don't like doesn't make it good

Make the annual fee weight dependent to offset the damage done to roadways.

Surely some bean counters can do the math.

Trust those forcing taxation?

I think not.

Texas is an oil state and I am sure that they would love to tax EVs out of existence.

Also I can see why conservatives would oppose EVs, especially since the libs love them. But I hate more taxation which is a liberal position as well.

If they don't have to pay than nobody else should either and TX should abolish the gas tax.
