You don’t think Europeans can tell the difference between Spanish and a Deep South accent?

In Italy we met several people from UK and a few from Australia. Got into a language/dialect conversation. They all expressed that their favorite American accent was none other than the southern accent. Said it was pleasing to the ear and wasn’t thought of as “ignorant” or slow like our yankee brethren think. They told me I sounded like Britney Spears, which of course didn’t seem like much of a compliment at the time—during her meltdown years.

Anyone have any distinct examples of a Midwestern accent? I just know they say "warsh" instead of "wash".

Maine has a distinct accent.
Pittsburgh has a distinct accent.
Michigan (parts of it at least) now has a weird accent.

All of them are atrocious.

These should really be categorized together. The southern twang is present in both. Texas can't be more than another subcategory of the broader southern dialect and there's no way Europeans know the difference. Hell I wouldn't hear someone with a "Texas" accent and assume they have to be from that state.

feel like they’re probably thinking of the regal South Carolina/Georgia type accent. More foghorn leghorn than some bama trailer trash.

When I moved to Alaska as a teen I quickly discovered the girls at school loved my southern accent and manners. This fact coupled with my terrible fear of having the dreaded Yankee accent rub off on me resulted in my sprach resembling an absurd mixture of Foghorn Leghorn/Rhett Butler.

Don’t laugh though, it worked.

These really aren't the best examples of Midwestern accents.

Fargo is set in Minnesota so assumed it fell under "Minnesotan accent".

Fargo is set in North Dakota. No geography points for you. But I do think the accent is largely the same as many Minnesotans, so for all intents and purposes....

Only part of the movie is in ND. In fact, the woman in the pic he posted is playing the role of the Brainerd, MN police chief.

No movie trivia points for you.

A bartender in British Columbia thought I was from Australia. He was shocked when I told him Alabama.
