Relationship with mom was terrific. Relationship with dad was strained at moments but never estranged.

I was for a while due to my mother treating my now wife like shite, and despite talking to her about it, she refused to see fault and essentially turned her side of the family against her. i walked away from her and we didn't see or talk to them for almost 2 years. to this day non of our family on her side will even speak to either of us - even when they come to visit my folks.

they are back in our lives now, mainly due to my dads dementia and failing health, and she never apologized or has any remorse for what went down, my wife just let it go so I would be there for my dad in the limited time we have left.

my mom has massive narcissistic tendencies and can be very controlling.

Both my live-in girlfriend and I are estranged from our parents, so we usually do our own thing over the holidays unless something crazy happens like it did last year.

We were headed to Fiji (we tell our families our trips are for charity work), but our flight was cancelled due to weather and out of nowhere, a local news crew interviewed us at the airport...live, on air, about the cancelled flight.

Once our families found out our trip was cancelled, we were forced to do four Christmases in one day. It was wild, but we did grow as a couple and decided to have a baby. She's due around New Years, but we're keeping it a secret from our families for now.

I, as well as my siblings, were estranged from our father.

My mom.is great. If my dad's druggie arse was still around I doubt we would have anything to do with each other. He got himself beaten to death by "friends". I rarely see my sisters because drugs, and abusive treatment when I was a kid.

You should submit this to Hallmark for a movie script.

Parents estranged themselves often by their poor choices, children often have to set healthy boundaries for themselves and their own children.

It's sad and hurtful but sometimes you have no option or it's out of your control.

If they’re really that bad then that’s what you gotta do.

Which, think what you want, but you don’t have to tell me this in the hospital room.

I can’t tell what you’re talking about here.

Father left my mother when she was pregnant .. what a guy. He did his duty with child support and what not but at age 50 ,me) he wanted a “real relationship” and to know his grandkids (all adults basically).

At this point I only reply “thanks” or “you too” to a text. My oldest wanted nothing to do with him .. the other two visited and were polite but I think felt they had to.

Now none of them do. Idk if he ever texts them or not.

My narcissist mom and my mentally weak sister haven’t spoken in a year and a half. And my sister won’t let her see the grandkids. To me, it’s frick both of them. But of course my mom expects me to fix it.

Are you estranged from a parent or both?

No. My father died when I was ten and my mother has become a mean old woman? I still go by her house two or three days per week and annoy her by dropping off laundry.

Do you know anyone who completely cut ties with their parents?

Yes and IMHO the parents deserved it. Either drunks or addicts or batshite insane who used their kids as an ATM or an emotional punching bag.

My wife cut her dad out permanently. "frick you, die alone, never talk to me again, never attempt to contact me ever again, don't contact anyone else in the family unless you want a bounty on your head" kind of stuff.
