Hopefully no one is too stupid to not understand the motives of the university in this naming issue.
They are one of a host of members of the University of Louisiana system. Because it is a conglomeration of old universities in Louisiana it is a very large university system in the US. By appropriating the name of the system it will be a money play within Louisiana politicis.

Nah, have you seen a ULL diploma? They claim their sports name is "Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns". It would be the same if LSU added "Louisiana's" to Fighting Tigers.
