He was a native of Pointe Coupee Parish. I read several of his books and found them to be hackneyed and stereotyped. But that's just me. The Oprah thought he was wonderful.

Always liked his work. I got him to sign a copy of "A Lesson Before Dying" when he was a honorary professor at ULL.

I read Miss Jane Pittman in school, but not Gathering of Old Men; I read that years later. I found the books enjoyable (despite their flaws), but didn't think he was this literary master he's portrayed to be. However, he was a great ambassador for Louisiana.

His house was on LA 1 on the way to New Roads. It's on the left just before the old Bonaventure's landing (Sand Bar) with two large metal "G"'s on the gates.

Talent oozed out of EJG. Able to listen to him speak a few times at BR Foundation events. Wonderful story teller.
