What? Isnt the graduation rate for Southern something like 6-8% for a 4 year degree? frick them, burn that school to the ground and plant some trees or something.

Wrong. TOPS standards should be raised. If stupid people can't find money to go to college, hey shouldn't go. College is not for every one. Your classmate with a 2.4 in HS should not have gone to college.
BTW: They ain't teaching shite out at Southern

I just read the article as well. My takeaway, some people don't need to go to college. Today's society thinks that people have a right to a 4 year degree or that you won't be successful without one. Higher education is not for everyone. Some people would be much better off not going to college and learning a trade. Unfortunately, there is a stigma with not earning a college degree that causes many of these people to incur student debt trying to earn a college degree before realizing that it isn't for them.

Things that aren't basic rights yet people act otherwise:
Owning a home
Going to college
Basically having money in general
The sooner people understand that, the better off we'll be.

Yep. My grandparents generation understood that. My generation thinks that you are entitled to a college degree. If you want a college degree and can't afford tuition, then work your arse off in high school and earn a scholarship. There's no reason, as a minority, you should not be able to qualify for TOPS plus other scholarships if you try in high school. All of my minority friends in high school were getting scholarship letters weekly our senior year, and none of them had GPAs over 3.5.

Isn't it already tough to get a job with college degree? Why make it even tougher for cheaper or free college? Damn liberals man

TOPS is not for TPOS

You graduated high school with a 3.8 and got zilch?
This is the part where you tell us the rest of the story.

I'm sorry ... I didn't read the whole article but my first thought was "why does EVERYTHING seem to always have to be about black and white???".
My next thought was a minimum of 2.5 GPA and a 20 on the ACT is NOT hard. I wouldn't expect that that consideration should ever be given to lower that standard.

The standards for TOPS are so ridiculously low, that if you can't meet them you shouldn't be attending college at that time. I say at that time because I've seen high school rocks come out of the military born again academically. They have the discipline, motivation, and means (GI Bill) to succeed in college or a trade.

The whole point of TOPS is that it is merit based and not need based. It was to keep the brain drain of smarter students from leaving the state. If anything, the standards need to be raised.
The truth is that with the budget crunch you are about to see in this upcoming legislative session, they probably will scrap the program altogether or greatly reduce it. Both of my kids have now graduated, scrap away!
