Chem E - Excel for me. I especially like the ease of making nice graphs from data bases.

BME and I use both daily. Probably Excel more, but we create a lot of our graphics in MatLab.

Wish I would have had at least one class on excel in college..
Excel is an incredibly powerful program. Probably the most powerful program in the world. I studied CE and Programming. Engineering and programming are very similar and I am surprised they arent linked closer in school. I think it probably has to do with the amount of fundamentals and logic that programming has before you even get into languages. Then there is added "code" that must be checked in addition to calcs. Just about any profession can benefit from someone with advanced Excel and VBA skills.

Excel
I have never worked at a company that used MatLab.

Now I'm imagining that clown wearing a nice suit in a formal job interview.
"Who processes your data efficiently using a bevy of technical skills... AutoYes.. AutoYes."

Engineers: Excel, MatLab, both or neither?
Excel and Matlab are completely different programs that serve different purposes. This is like asking people if they prefer Microsoft Word or Google Chrome.

EE - never use matlab except for personal use, only use excel for basic stuff that you should know anyway.
Everything I use on a daily basis you won't see in college. That has more to do with creating projects/work orders/problem evaluation reports/etc.

I use Excel for all of my calcs.
MatLab can be a very powerful tool, but Excel is easier to due to it being on pretty much any computer. it has the capacity to do any calcs that I require of it.

No one uses R? LINK I use this and Excel/VBA a good bit, but I'm more on the Hydro Engineering/Climatology side.

R is the best thing ever

Why would anyone do so?
Saving a few hundred bucks on an Excel license means less than nothing. I can find a true Excel genius far less expensively than I can find an R expert. Not to mention that the Excel guy's work can be much more easily shared.

am a mechanical engineer working in the pipeline industry and can honestly say that the last time I touched matlab was when I was in school...I use excel daily and it is on every computer in the company...I have never seen a copy of matlab outside of the school environment...
