He’s fricked. It’s well known internships are pretty much THE way a job post college. Someone didn’t put in the effort to find something

You’re doing it wrong.
My wife is an engineer (civil) and she was interviewing her last semester and had a job before she graduated.

Did you believe this obvious lie that there were no career fairs?

Man this is a pretty negative thread. Tell him to target engineering firms if he wants chemical or oil and gas experience, major operating companies are generally shrinking and the industry as a whole is utilizing more contract and “offshore” labor.
The days of being a 30 year engineer for Shell or Chevron aren’t completely gone but if he hasnt had a few internships or a serious connection in those companies, he’s gonna need to hustle up some experience as a contractor. There’s mechanical engineers everywhere, tell him to identify an industry he’s excited about and spend some time trying to find an entry point.
Idle time could be spent sweeping or existing somehow in a pressure vessel shop or industrial machine shop and he’d be ahead of many peers knowing what a flange, nozzle, impeller, bearing, etc. is.

Others have mentioned GPA, but I put that pretty low on my list. I've come across plenty of worthless 4.x'ers and awesome 2.x'ers.
Even if he doesn't have "professional" level experience ... he's a fresh out ... put summer jobs, campus work, project teams at school, etc. Anything that indicates initiative.
The biggest thing I see lacking in current college grads is give-a-shite and work ethic. I haven't figured out how to interpret that through resumes I see.

He lied to his old man about his college having a career center

If I see an engineering resume without a summer internship or co-op that tells me all I need to know about a candidate’s give-a-shite

100% possible.
If you are a solid 2.5 candidate then someone will snap you up when you prove it. Quickly.
You will strike out a lot more often <3 than above 3.5.

My GPA was closer to 2.0 than it was to 2.5.
But I own my business now so no one cares.
But to OP even with my shite GPA I had internships and multiple job offers out of college.

Internships, co-ops, student activities (ASME Baja, ASCE Steel Bridge/Concrete Canoe...), High gpa, passed the FE....
To name a few.
Also, what does he want to do? MEP Design? O&G? Petrochemicals?

He needs to change his last name to Patel and apply the darkest spray tan available. He will get a job quickly at 1/3 the going rate. He can live with you for 3 years until he gains experience.

I’ve had juniors/seniors reach out and request a conversation on my role in the company and what I thought managers were looking for. Just had a conversation via Teams / Zoom. If they had potential I asked for their resume and passed their resume along internally.
Your kid is behind. The comments around not thinking the university had services for getting jobs is concerning.

I know that this is thread turned out pretty negative…that’s the world in which we live nowadays. I just spend]T a 30{ year career in engineering and engineering management. I can tell you that if your son graduated in ME from an accredited engineering school with above a 3.0 gpa, he will be fine.
It may take some effort, but he will find a job. A lot of hiring managers are oldsters like me…and we prefer paper. I would have him print paper resumes and cover letters to everywhere he would want to work and hand deliver if possible. What better way to stand out from the crowd?
Also, if he has passed the FE exam, be sure to specify that.

OP won’t say what college this was

What would be the decision made of someone much older than a fresh grad with no engineering experience being hired as an engineer directly with a major company?

What are ya’ll doing in Jonesboro? I’d assume the wood plant since that’s about all that’s there.
Caney Lake would be a nice option to live nearby
