1. Mechanical 2. Chemical 3. Civil (also look at Land Surveying License) Petroleum is too cyclical.

I'd put 3 as EE, if the kid prefers the other two.

Civil would be a backup in case you failed out of the other 3.

As far as the industrial side goes, The most in demand is Electrical.

Chemical Engineering may be the most “versatile” in terms of getting interviews and opening doors.

This coming from a biological engineer that had to explain to literally everyone what I studied in school

Electrical engineers are nowhere near on the same pay scale as Chemical Engineers. Electrical is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to engineering degrees and it's boring as shite. I've been in the oil & gas business for 20 yrs and have an ME degree along with a drafting degree.

Maybe in the O&G industry, but you are smoking crack if you think that is true other places. Civils are the bottom of the barrel on the engineering pay scale overall. Maybe industrials should be there too since they are spreadsheet engineers.

Some numbers for you

base salary or total compensation? What year was that?
You're full of shite if you're talking about base salary (or your roommate fed you BS and you believed it)

I know this isn't one of his options but I saw Electrical engineering. Electrical engineers are always needed and the industry is huge unlike Chemical or Petro (Unless in the oil field industry).

One thing about EE's are they're always needed no matter where you go.

Firstly, Clemson doesn’t have a petroleum engineering program, so he doesn’t have that option there.

Second, that’s probably a good thing. I’m a petroleum engineer and work for an oil company because I got hired during $100 oil. I read forums online now and most of the grads are getting field engineering jobs doing wireline or fracking wells in west Texas. Those jobs kind of suck and they aren’t even engineering jobs, and they have little opportunity for career progression from what I gather

Chemical will let him get into the oil industry if he tries hard enough, but give him the flexibility to work in another industry. And I would definitely take some computer science classes

Not even Exxon’s total compensation is above $110k. Any total compensation above $120k is BS. Your roommate is messing with you.

I was a Chem E and it has paid off for me. However, looking back, I think Mech E is probably the way to go. Chem E/Mech E are somewhat interchangeable in the job world but I would say Mech E applies directly to more fields and will allow for more opportunities (not necessarily better opportunities just more). I would seriously consider an industrial engineering degree if that is an option.
