Exactly. Now imagine you have to do nothing.

What’s the difference between that and retirement?

I dont see how it is possible,
There are plenty of jobs out there AI/Robots cant replace.

They are only effective in a singular controlled enviroment.

No one is giving out money, esp. people/companies who have worked through the years to continue to bring in money.

I dont know where it is going but, to say, yeah, you wont have to work so you can focus on bettering yourself.

The interesting, thing, is if it does lower costs that can be huge a benefit.

This is not a good thing. Work gives most of us meaning, and we are supposed to be providing services in our society.

100% - plus personal interaction which is already disappearing with cell phones is troubling enough, put another variable in there along with WFH - just flat not working....it just really is not a good thing on many and varied fronts.

Not working does not equal doing nothing.

Yet, this is precisely what most people who can’t/won’t work do….nothing.

Unless AI also magically changes human nature, this viewpoint is way optimistic.

Not much. Probably why so many people die shortly after they stop working.

No, it means not required to do anything. Though you might be able to fill your days with meaningful productive things, most people wouldn’t have a clue what to do with all the time.

Doing nothing can be meaningful and productive to the individual. I hear all the time the lie that there is meaning in work, yet people spend unreal $$ on games of chance every day just so that they can quit working. People invest and budget their whole lives just so that they can retire. It's a lie. No one wants to work.

Where will the money come from to fund the UBI? Individual income taxes comprise about 50% of revenues. Corporate taxes are a little over 10%. Payroll taxes are another 35%.

And how would goods be almost free? Labor is only one input to making an IPhone. Labor is only about 15% of the cost of making an iPhone. So eliminating that doesn’t get the cost anywhere close to free. Resources will still scarce.

People don’t “want” to go to the dentist, eat a balanced diet, and exercise. That doesn’t make the phrase “doing these things is good for you” a lie. Your basic desires are not necessarily the arbiter of what is or is not in your best interest.

Additionally, if one hates his current job, that doesn’t mean “win the lotto so I can stop working entirely” is the only solution.

I can’t understand that way of thinking at all. My job is less than 1% of who I am and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Is your point not “people don’t want to work so the idea that work has meaning is a lie”?

If so, read what I wrote again.

Meaning as in you owe society and yourself work in order to be fulfilled. Your response was to talk about physical health. Also, I haven't once suggested that someone has to hate their job in order to not want to work.

this

so many are so naive. there are so many jobs out there that could never be replaced by AI. Could AI make them more efficient.....sure but not replace.

The problem won't be work. We will eventually automate ourselves out of the need. The problem is and will always be scarcity of resources. An "every thing is free" society will quickly fall to rationing.

I imagine the future alot like the world in that shitty Elysium movie..

The wealthiest people live "off-world" in a pristine spaceship environment, while the middle class has been reduced down and combined with the lower class to basically be slave labor -- working countless hours doing the only jobs AI cant do and being rewarded with just enough compensation to not die.

Imagine how different your life would be if work was "optional" and how many people tie their identity to what they do for work.
I saw the Bee Movie and its not good. And, there's nothing wrong with tying your identity to what you di and what gathers you respect. Superior to tying your identity to a sports team.
