We just told our daughter that the elves only go to naughty kid’s houses to keep an eye on them

I've doe it now for about a decade, with 3 kids who span a total of 5 years difference between them. Probably only have 2-3 years left if I'm lucky. It's a pain in the arse but I'm pretty sure I'll look back at in 20 years as good memories.

New tradition.

Traditions take handing down and repetition to become "traditional".

Elf on the Shelf is commercially less than 20yrs old.

Hence, "new tradition"

Now... the Macarena is tradition- I learned it as a kid (teenager) and have successfully passed it on to my own progeny.

I suppose, lol...

What is your ideal elf on a shelf scene?

Mine would all be awful... I bet my elf would be armed, dangerous and deranged more often than not.

Two things i won’t do- elf on a shelf and iPads

I didn't mind the EotS when I was married and the kids were little.

It was kind of fun to see them wake up in the morning to see where "he" went. Continued to do it for them for a while after our marriage was over because they enjoyed.

Never did anything crazy with it in terms of different "situations" it would find itself in.

For the love of everything that is holy, I wish I could undo the whole iPads at an early age thing.

It's completely retarded because you turn one night of deception into an entire month of it.

You are way more likely to spoil the Christmas "magic" BS with this elf on the shelf non-sense IMO.

Meh.. tell one lie, might as well tell a month's worth- your credibility is already blown.

With the kid being 14, everyone in the house knows the deal, it's just not talked about. He no longer goes on a mission to find the elf as soon as he gets up. He casually tell me later in the day, "Dad, the elf was hanging from the light today..." I think he still has fun with it. He's told me they have an elf in the band room at school that moves around.

Ironically, I've not failed to move him a single night this year. He made the trip to grandma and grandpa's house and is sitting upstairs ready to be discovered this am....

My kids were too old for elf on the shelf by the time it was a thing. I’m glad for that

We do it. I hate it, but my kids love it.

Same. But I love their reactions when we do a themed one.

My son lost a tooth two days ago. So I taped the elves to the window and wrote a note from the tooth fairy that said “I caught these two snooping around so I tied them up”

That's what I did this year. I bought a Santa Zoom call right after Thanksgiving, and had Santa tell them that they have been so good every year, and he needs to focus on the bad kids. He said the elves would pop in a few times to say hi. The kids were happy. It worked great for all parties.
