With the lack of social gatherings, mask wearing, hand washing, etc. Has anyone seen formalized data on what effect we have had on other common airborne illnesses?

I mean we’ve essentially had zero flu patients in the hospital I work at this year when we would have 1-2 dozen at any point during the peak months of flu season in the past.

Our daycare has pretty much eradiated the cold. Pediatrician has said similar with all kids they're seeing in daycares. Poor kids are going to get their asses kicked by colds when they eventually let up.

COVID virus eats the flu virus. Therefore, no flu this year.

This is essentially what we have seen as well. Rapid flus and final flu panels show nothing. I honestly think I have seen 2. One was a rapid. The other was a final culture.

Strep as well. Very few positive strep swabs. Strep is a bacteria and not a virus, so that really makes no sense to me.

Get a damned infectious disease doc on here. Can one virus dominate and leave too few hosts for other virus to take hold? Otherwise explain it to me.

It's almost as if the only thing the medical profession is looking for is covid for some strange reason? Those with run of the mill cold and flu like they have gotten many times before need not show up for the counting. We have a pandemic to keep going goddamnit!!!

Think about how those are transmitted though.

Strep is spread through sneezing, coughing, and breathing. A large portion of the population has been masked and social distancing. Many are working from home still. People are also practicing legitimate hygiene, like washing hands that they really weren't focused on before.

The flu is spread in a similar fashion.

I haven't seen near the Mono cases in kids I work with as I normally do because they're just not around each other as much to spread it.

Wrong. Common Respiratory Viral Panels run off of nasopharyngeal swabs test for many viruses including Covid. The other viruses aren’t the cause of any of the infections we are seeing in hospitals now.

It’s almost as if masking, social distancing, and washing your hands works for something.

I didn’t argue about covid. The question was about the cold/flu.
