Why don't they subtract homestead from the assessed value?
They do to calculate your taxes on those millages that the homestead exemption applies. But from what I understand not all tax millages carry a homestead exemption.

I got one too. Said my house appraised at $20,000 more than it did a couple years before

My rent house is now worth $190/sqft according to the assessor.

Say it with me: EVERY POLITICIAN IS CORRUPT.
Who wants to play "I'll bet you if they wanted to take that property, "Fair Market Value" wouldn't be $190/sq ft."
Think about that one a little bit and let your blood boil.

Does the state limit the rate of increase in appraisal?
Texas does but it the limit should be halved especially for primary residences.
I understand the necessity of paying local taxes but when they keep ratcheting up the assessment and rates on primary residences you are basically just a bottomless piggy bank for the government.

In EBR most of our property taxes do not go into the general fund. Done does, but most of the property tax revenues go to public schools, BREC (parks), Libraries, COA, the Sheriff, Mosquitto and Rat Control, public transportation and EMS,
The thing is we aren’t gaining population. The population is flat.
Public school numbers are declining too. We have fewer students.
Now we are going to put more $$$$$ into the budgets of agencies that really don’t need the revenue.

80% increase uptown NOLA
Thanks. Now I don't feel as bad for my 40% increase in the quarter.

I got mine in the mail and it was a big jump.
But, I am left to wonder about the homestead exemption amount. When was this amount set? It’s been $75,000 for as long as I can remember. Shouldn’t it be indexed to inflation or some other metric? Getting a $75,000 exemption was pretty generous in the 1980’s but now not so much.

Just got mine in the mail. Property increase $50k, 18% increase overnight. This is criminal.
My property might actually be worth that if this POS city would address flooding.
How do we appeal?

They're out on a blatant money grab so evidently they do need it, justifiable or not.

Following the lead of the OrleansPariah assessor I see, who on an annual basis targets more affluent folks Uptown with less melanin than he has for obscene 100% and higher increases in their home values.... meanwhile a black politically connected person With a comparable house three blocks down from you has a mysteriously much lower assessment. There is a quiet exodus from Orleans Parish. Some friends of mine after just buying a nice home Uptown and dealing with this in their home before that... they just bought a lot in Old Metairie and getting the F out of LaToya the Destroya’s Chocolate City. I did the same two years ago. NOLA is doing everything it can to drive its tax base away... which is familiar behavior for JBE and most Democrats. They don’t seem to get that people take their money and walk and you get nothing.

We went up 20 percent. I've made small improvements, but not that much. My insurance went up substantially last year too, so this is just the way it goes. Does suck though.

Dang, I pulled up the site, they say my house is worth $110k more than we paid for it 5 years ago! I don't recall ever seeing an increase notice, but my wife pays the tax bill so I never really looked at it. House is paid and paying rent to the government to live in my house just pisses me off.
I think they should have to buy your house for the assessment value if you choose to sell your house. If they want to tax you on its value, they need to put some skin in the game.

I just realized that between the 50 percent insurance increase and the 20 percent property tax, I am paying just as much as I did in Texas. The one difference is that I am living in BR instead of Mansfield, Texas. hmmm.

I’m guessing there is a way to appeal but the success rate of getting it overturned is probably slim to none ?

I found the doc for my property on the assessors website, but can't tell if the tax was increased or not and when. How can you tell?

In jefferson parish mine just went up 45%... I bought this house last year, that is crazy to me.
Posted on 8/27/20 at 3:48 pm to SpillwayRoyalty
Same, mine went up 30%

Pull up the 2019 assessment and the 2020 to compare. Our house value was increased by $65,000 and taxes went up by $700
