I teach at a school that is about 90% Title I (students who qualify as economically disadvantaged). Our parents do a pretty damn good job with their kids, but we still have many who do not have winter coats. When it is cold enough outside, some will double and triple up on school sweatshirts. Most schools in EBR have it much worse. Putting some of these kids at a bus stop before sunrise with the wind chill in the single digits is not exactly ideal when you have the capacity as a school district to have a virtual day. At that temp/chill, a kid can get frostbite on exposed skill after 20-30 minutes
So a warm school building with 2 hot meals is probably better than being home for a lot of those children?

To all the know it all folks, I’m a former supervisor in a local school system, and we spent many a Sunday going over all variables with the superintendent prior to hurricanes, winter weather, or possible tornadic weather. There’s much more to making that decision besides just having a day off.
Then perhaps you can help us understand why in a society with today's communication technology these decisions are made 72 hours in advance. It seemed to work fine 40 years ago when the decisions were made the morning of with only tv, radio, and smoke signals as a means of communication to the masses.

Another school closure thread turning into a bitch fest argument about it.
By people who probably don't have kids in the school system

I would love to hear the reasons why there cannot be a plan of action that can be activated on a Sunday rather than Friday.
Hell send an update Friday and say he parent we are monitoring the weather situation and will provide updates through the weekend. There is a potential for schools to be closed Monday so we asked teachers and staff to plan accordingly.
I got a similar update from Delta Utilities and Entergy the last couple days.

My kids don’t have winter coats. And they’re more likely to wear a sweatshirt to school in August than January.
I wouldn’t judge the parents based on what the kid is wearing unless they’re little.

Hell, I don’t think anyone in my family owns a coat.
I’d bet the current decision making trends would immediately reverse if employees needed to take leave during closures.

People in here need to calm down. It is one day of school we are talking about. We didnt miss any school in the fall for hurricanes so what’s the big deal? I thought all teachers do is babysit anyway, so why the fuss about missing learning “instructional time?”
I teach in EBR and Im excited about my day off! Not my problem you gotta go to work!!

However, the reality is we live in an incredibly litigious state. If little Johnny slips because there is ice the school gets sued. A bus slides on the ice and crashes the school gets sued.
Could you share some news stories with examples of this?

When I worked at the public library, people were always suing it for something stupid - last one before I left was a woman was wearing sandals and she used the handicapped button to open the door and and the door cut her foot
It wasn’t in the news

Let’s put the blame on the school board administrators. All they worry about is lawsuits. I had a great principal, she wanted to move up told us what she could do for us in a position that was higher up. Boy that was a bunch of bull all she ever talked about was following policy so I don’t get sued. She also got a big raise and none of the teachers that worked for her got a cent. So consequently she left them to be lead by an idiot for 2 years, who couldn’t find his butt with both hands a map and a flashlight. So there you go school boards only care about themselves.
