Easily replaced if you put out a wanted ad for the job.

Flexible hours
Starting pay = $32/hour
Pay Range = $32 - $50/hour
Full benefits = medical/dental
Pension!
Part time
Holidays, weekends off
No education required.

It's not that simple and they do this already. I'm constantly seeing ads around my town and on social media constantly. It's just not an appealing job to people who drive for a living and have bills to pay.

I guess. Almost no private school uses busses here. Holy Cross used to run a few busses out to Metairie and to the West Bank. Not even sure if they do that now

Yeh that’s strange. Private schools in BR are very bus heavy, at least they were in the 90s and early 2000s

1 driver per bus, right? So right now they have 50 extra drivers without a bus to drive? I realize there must be a few backups/spares but why would they need 50 more buses than drivers?

Sounds like a good side job, become a bus driver without a bus.

Is this a Nola thing? All the private Catholic schools used busses in br and a shite ton of kids used them

St. Aloysius had like 10 busses alone when I was there

There is a statewide grant that was done well over 40 years ago that provides public school busses for all schools that are part of the Catholic Dioceses. Catholic High and SJA are not part of the Dioceses that is why they do not have busses. All other private schools have to pay for private busing.

I get it. But in BR, when I was going to school, the private schools still used busses and relied on them heavily. My elementary school alone had more than 10 busses

Well if that’s true let them walk and they will have the busses still rolling no problem right?

What specialized skill set do they offer? Or qualifications do they need?

None

Hell half of them drive more erratic than any other car on the road and don’t show up anyway.

Awesome. Should be extremely easy to let them walk and have the busses rolling again then

What the morons on the advocate and the drive by media are posting is the lump sump pay amount. "They only get 22k/year", nevermind the $14k that just got approved last night for them. Ok, break that down to hourly pay, plus benefits. Put that on a help wanted sign with just the facts of the pay/benefits/hours. Watch how many people apply for the job. These bus drivers lack perspective. It's a job you can easily do part time. You can get another job to fill the 6 hour gap and make a very good living. How many of these bus drivers have a second job? I'd be willing to bet these people aren't go getters looking to provide for themselves. However, they are low information types that just want a "living wage" which ironically doesn't pay as well as being a bus driver in EBR.

I’m not denying all of your points but what isn’t getting enough discussion in here is the kids they have to drive around. It’s not a safe job. Fights, weapons, disrespect, misbehavior, parents wanting to fight the bus driver, etc all while trying to pay attention to the road/traffic and get these criminals in training from one place to another safely. They don’t want to be on that bus anymore than they want to be at school and the bus drivers get little to no support regarding behavior. They are also hiring very poor drivers who are honestly frightening to watch because that’s probably all who will take the job.

You’d have to pay me a lot more than they’re offering to drive a bus in Baton Rouge. That offer would be decent in the suburbs.

The three kids I know taking the buses 1 private 2 public have had bus drivers that have missed them half of the days to start this school year.

They suck, maybe that is why they get paid so little.

Free? Have you seen your tax bill?

LOL you think 90% of the people with kids in EBRSS pay taxes? It’s free to them. Their kids are gone all day, get free food and the parents aren’t required to have any responsibility. It’s absolutely daycare in most cases outside of the magnet schools.

A week into the school year, no. But there is something about having 3 months to figure this shite out before the first week of school.

How about Mr Janitor, I know you are making $28k a year, but how would you like to make $48k a year and all you have to do is drive the kids to school on a bus you don’t own.

Or Mr PE teacher instead of $45k how would you like to make $65k and drive the bus to school.

That’s the way it used to be, but now driving a bus for 4 hours a day 9 months a year is seen as a career?

But no, they wait until the first week of school and negotiate using children. Those are people we think have our kids best interest in mind.

How does that solve the problem that the bus drivers don't want to have to drive to catholic schools?

With limited resources they should prioritize public schools not privite and Catholic. Transportation director told me directly that parochial are the priority

I was thinking this as well. Why can’t they get support staff to run these busses?

So attorneys, lawyers, accountants, doctors, etc and anyone that works for people or the public should never ask for more money? Look, if they aren’t worth the raise, then that means they are easily replaceable and there are people willing and able lined up to replace them
