People are being nickel and dimed into oblivion.
Sure there is a lot of frivolous spending and people prioritize "wants" vs "needs" but just think about a list of things people pay for now that just weren't either a paid for service or never existed a few generations ago.

Consumers have to learn to say no. If they don't, it's just going to get worse.

I just don’t get who is saying yes. Who is paying hundreds of dollars for concerts and other entertainment events. Are people doing all of this on credit? I have some discretionary income at this point in my life but I’m not paying 500 to see Metallica

You'll own nothing and like it.

Zoomers and/or their Gen X parents. Also probably single millennials.

How much are those Billy Joel/Stevie Nicks tickets again?

Some people prioritize entertainment over bills.

I wouldn't pay that to see a band but I kind of understand it. I'd prefer to spend most of my discretionary income on experiences.

Yeah, the experience of being debt free and not poor.

I was gonna take my kid to see Metallica, but I stopped the process when the dumbass fees got added. Sorry, I refuse to double my ticket cost for digital tickets.

People will pay more for what they want than what they need.

I won't download apps that are "free." I'd rather pay you $7 up front, and I've stuck by that whenever I'm not forced to download a school sports app that wants $1.99 a month to avoid ads, etc.
Look at this a different way: You're not having to pay for stuff you don't want, but can pay if you want to select your seat, or remove ads, etc. You *can* cancel ESPN outside of Football/Baseball season, but they rely on inertia for you not to. You can control that with calendar reminders, etc. You have the power to be in control, but most people find it easier just to rage against the machine and "modern" society. Your use of "nickel and dimed," lays that pretty bare. Those are the words that people that feel cheated use.
Remember, ever when we had land lines, we had to pay for that POS line, even if the phone never rang. When I relied on payphones to call the ladies back, I still had to pay for a pager, every month (upgraded to two way on that sweet, sweet enlisted pay!) Your $98 trip to Vegas with the additional $50 for a checked bag, and $40 to select a seat on top of that would have been a $429 plane ticket ten years ago (but two "free" bags and a "free" seat selection!) Be positive bro, you've always paid, you just have more choices now.

It's not nickel and dimed, items are going up by 20% or more regularly.

Talk to Swifties, at least Metallica rocks. The all in cost for Apocalyptica in Houston was around $80, which I'm not going to pay. But if they'd listed the up front cost at $45, and the fees got added, and it ended up being $80 in the end, I might have paid it. It's how the brain works, and also why they do it.
Next time, just wait until the day of the concert to buy tickets. I sold two $800 tickets to the Motley Crue fest two years ago for a total of $350 day of because ... ex wife reasons. There are deals to be had.

I am disappointed to see a man of your beliefs praising the enshittification of everything.
I get it, but still disappointed.

HUH??? Isn't that the definition of an "experience" as opposed to buying a "thing"

It's more about changing how one thinks to avoid one's life become an endless stream of bitching about things you can't control. Instead of yelling at some clouds, I choose to note the shape of the clouds, then drink a lot, and imagine the days of clouds gone by without rage or helplessness. I hold the actual rage for left lane campers, and the lack of effective parental interest in their own kids lives, etc.

If you read what I posted you'd realize that I was saying I understand why somebody would pay $500 for metallica tickets because I also prefer to spend my money on experiences.

Me!
But I enjoy experiences and I have all the physical things I need and my son needs. All my bills are taken care of every month, my only debt is my mortgage which is almost half paid off.
My credit card bill is paid down to zero every month and I put money into retirement at work and a separate roth ira.
So why would I say no to doing something fun?
I saw Taylor last year in Indianapolis. Went to Giggly Squad in Nola 2 weeks ago. Flying to Minneapolis to see Post Malone in May. Each concert is like a mini vacation/long weekend.
