It’s a fad, it’s counter culture.
But they get dragged in by the nut cases and go deeper and deeper until there is no coming back after hormones or just plain suicide.

After the show, Jaleel was too scared of what his friends would think of him, and it got so bad that his own father had to tell the writers he would never play the character again.
