What many of you seem to have a hard time with is the chicken and the egg problem. Did these drugs CAUSE it or were these guys on the drugs because they already had issues? I would bet it was the latter in almost all cases.

The issue is not if the drugs caused it or the other way around. The issue is whether these people had mental problems. Confirming the use of psychotropic drugs verifies that these people were mentally unstable. That is all the proof I'd need.

Is everything in a toxicology report public record?

I don’t think you have an understanding of a)the problem b) psychiatric illness and treatment c)how patient confidentially work.

A doctor has the right to break patient confidentiality if the public is in danger. Also, psychiatric patients are not the most compliant, likely due to their illness.

No, actually you're the moron. Or possibly someone taking a suspected drug?
quote:

Before the late nineteen eighties, mass shootings and acts of senseless violence were relatively unheard of. In a study of thirty-one drugs that are disproportionately linked to reports of violence toward others, five of the top ten are antidepressants. These are Prozac, Paxil, Luvox, Effexor and Pristiq.

Most all of the mass shooters have been linked to highly mood altering drugs. The claim is that the drugs remove the sense of right/wrong in order to lessen the degree of symptoms.

1) The first mass shooting to rock the nation was in 1966. Charles Whitman, known as the University of Texas Tower shooter, stabbed his wife and mother to death, then killed 15 and wounded 31. Shortly before that he was prescribed diazepam sold under the brand name Valium.

2) Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock was also sold Valium, in June of that year. Diazepam was also prescribed for John Hinckley Jr. before his attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.

3) Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 at Columbine High School. Eric was on Luvox, an antidepressant. Clinical trials revealed that 4 percent of youth taking Luvox developed "a dangerous and violence-prone mental derangement characterized by extreme excitement and delusion.”

4) The Virginia Tech shooter who killed 32 people was on an antidepressant.

5) Having regularly taken Prozac, Kip Kinkel murdered his mother and stepmother. He then shot 22 classmates.

6) Jason Hoffman shot 5 at his high school while he was on Effexor, also an antidepressant

7) James Holmes opened fire in a Colorado movie theater killing 12 people and wounding 58. He was taking Sertraline sold as Zoloft, an SSRI antidepressant

8) Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza was prescribed both Lexapro and Celexa

9) The Parkland High shooter according to child service reports was also on an unnamed medication following instances of self-cutting and posting it on social media, as well as admitting he was depressed

11) Patrick Purdy murdered 5 children and wounded 30 in a schoolyard shooting rampage in Stockton, California He was prescribed Amitriptyline, an antidepressant, as well as the antipsychotic drug Thorazine.

12) The Navy Yard shooter killed 13 people including himself. He had been prescribed an antidepressant Trazodone by Veterans Affairs.

14) Laurie Dann went on a shooting rampage in a second-grade classroom in Winnetka, Ill., killing 1 child and wounding 6. She had been taking the antidepressant Anafranil as well as Lithium, long used to treat mania.

15) Jeff Weise, living on Minnesota’s Red Lake Indian Reservation, shot and killed 9 people and wounded 5 others before killing himself. Weise had been taking Prozac.

16) Joseph Wesbecker, just a month after he began taking Prozac, shot 20 in Louisville, Kentucky, killing 9. Prozac-maker Eli Lilly later settled a lawsuit brought by survivors.

You’re not supposed to take antidepressants if your bipolar. It can induce mania. I think the common theme is that all these ppl have psychiatric illness, not that they were being treated.

People prior to the discovery of anti-depressants didn't have mental illnesses? Where are the cases of mass killings throughout history, at the frequency that we are seeing them since that discovery?

Correlation is not causation. There are millions of people on these drugs that don't shoot up public places.

Which one is it? OP says you can't find out what these mass shooters were taking while you have a full list.

I seem to recall the Las Vegas shooter taking a bunch of shite as well.

and it being released on what he was on.

So Wtf is OP talking about?

Very very true.

But geez... that's disturbing, if true.

How can you draw a correlation between antidepressant use and shootings when millions of people are also using them?

This thread makes me glad they don’t.

Case in point, you declare the “cause” definitively in the same post where you lament the “evidence” for it unavailable.

We got mentally ill dudes taking pills because they're mentally ill and then when they shoot up the place, we have people acting like the treatment caused the disease.
