KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A 71-year-old man who said he robbed a Kansas City, Kansas, bank so he could get away from his wife blamed his actions on depression.

A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced Lawrence John Ripple to six months of home confinement and 50 hours of community service.

Ripple went to the Bank of Labor — a block from the Kansas City, Kansas, police headquarters — last September and gave a note to a teller saying he had a gun and demanding money. After he was given money, Ripple waited for police.

Court records indicate Ripple wrote the robbery note in front of his wife and told her he would rather be in jail than at home.

The Kansas City Star reports Ripple told the judge Tuesday that heart surgery left him depressed and unlike himself before he robbed the bank.

Judge may as well gave him the death sentence.

He snagged a little more than two grand, then sat down in a chair and told the security guard that he "was the one they were looking for."

Very clever judge.

There was an UGA fan once who caused a security breach at the airport and had to spend each home game weekend in jail the following season.

Doesn't the 8th amendment protect from this bullshite? Y'all will die over the 2nd but the often over looked EIGHTH amendment never gets it time in the sun. Time for all of the proponents of the Crazy Eight to rise up!

Damn these activist judges! Punishment should fit the crime.

House arrest doesn't violate the 8th. It just so happens that this perp will really hate it.

That judge may have just killed him. He now needs to be placed on suicide watch.

6 months house arrest for bank robbery?

Not exactly a deterrent

At first I was thinking how understanding the judge was. Then, I re-read and saw it said 6 months house arrest.

God bless this poor old bastard.

In this case it's the perfect deterrent.
