If you go smooth, you'll find out really quick if your drywall work is top notch... or not.

It's funny how textured, especially blown on orange peel, is really an inferior finish, but so many people have it they now think it's preferred.
Smooth finish requires a full float, full sand, and quality Sheetrock work. Orange peel allows you to just shoot crap on a wall and skim sand. There's a reason it's cheaper and it's what you see in spec homes.

Unless you know how to properly float and finish drywall, you're going to want to texture it.

I have a few mexicans doing the job. The ring leader(only english speaking guy) asked me if I wanted texture, I said no texture.
I'll have to re-discuss this with him when he arrives and see what he is comfortable with. I don't want smooth and have it looking like crap.

You in LA? Most everyone goes with a light orange peel. Tell them that and they will know what to do. Stress light. The butt joints and texture seperate the men from the boys on sheet rock work.

They generally try.to sell different levels of "smooth" which is usually a crock of crap.
If they do decent work, they can handle smooth. A lot of guys like to do texture b/c it covers up flaws. Texture is pretty much out, kinda like painting ceilings white.

Aren't most new construction homes in Louisiana textured and typically orange peel? I can't think of the last time I saw a smooth finish.
