For those of you have either received drug testing or are the one that sets up a drug test for a candidate, which company do you use and why (if you're involved in this part of the process)?

What are some things that I should consider when "screening" these companies?

Use LabCorp as everyone seems to.
Consult attorney regarding setting up testing policy so that your in line with local laws.

The company I'm with now uses Prime on Airline. The last company used Labcorp on Industriplex.

You actually bring up a good point.

Is it possible to have the prospective employee pay for the drug screen initially and then be reimbursed cost plus interest (or a nominal fee) after 90 days (probationary period expires)?

I ask, because this seems like it might be a good way to reduce employee candidates that take the drug screen and never show up for work or quit one week afterwards. We're talking mostly about hourly employees and having "skin in the game" (minimal compared to average OT'er salary) may help reduce the pretenders from the contenders? This is just a thought of mine, but is this even legal in Louisiana?

Or just suck it up, pay for the drug screening and realize that this is a part of doing business?

The only negative that I can see with this is that if an prospective candidate pays for their own drug screening, they can pick whomever they choose and the "standard" that we have set will go by the way side since it is their choice to go where they want.

This.

If you ask potential employees to pay for an initial drug screen, it’ll give off “we are a cheap company” vibe; even if you reimburse it after 90 days.

The probation and parole office ran out again, and you need a clean screen to get your travel pass to Picayune?

I certainly understand that, I really do. However, this is an extremely high turnover position (it's the nature of this business and position; not a reflection upon any company's culture, mine or anyone else's).

Just trying to maybe "weed" out candidates from those who are somewhat serious to those that would bolt for a .10 cent an hour earnings opportunity with another company.

We pay and if they don’t make 90 days pay ourselves back from their last check

I suppose you must have some type of clause in their employment agreement or new-hire packet?

I was trying to capture it on the front-end (repayment), but like your idea just as much.

This sounds like a nightmare to keep track of. If you’re having issues with employee flight sounds like a different issue is going on.

Think about this seriously, would you accept a job that you had to pay for a drug test for? In addition, your applicant drop off once they find out they’re paying for the drug test is going to be big. I wouldn’t as it screams cheap company. You’ll end up with only those super desperate to work vs actual talent.

I would be surprised if the number of people that voluntary drug test for a position and test positive would be very high. Have you looked at those numbers to see stats?

This goes to the you reimbursing the employee thereafter piece
