I would contend that most using these drones to kill their enemies would take at least some pleasure in it, if not a great deal of it. No different than celebrating killing your enemy on the battlefield, and with drones you’re even more removed from the brutality of it. I know that I’d given the choice to kill their enemy face to face in a fair fight or pretty easily like this with a drone, most would choose the easy way to ensure that they get home safe every night.

That doesn’t seem like some unreasonable stance to me
I don't think it's unreasonable. I've served in combat and my homeland wasn't even invaded. Hell, we invaded theirs. My point was that the moral framework he's forming to attempt to explain how he would also kill invaders, but it's different for him because he would feel bad, is likely a common sentiment among some Ukrainian soldiers, and doesn't make him moraly superior to any of the current drone operators.

Yeah, or you know, if Putin stopped trying to conquer another country it would end as well…

I hope our military planners are taking note, but they’re probably attending DEI seminars and Pride Parades.

Honestly, I think the use of drones in this manner should be banned. As crazy as it sounds, even war has rules. Going back to last century there are many examples of weapons (mustard gas) that were banned from the battlefield. Removing the human element of killing your enemy removes the natural desire of trying to avoid a military conflict in the first place. Where’s the restraint when you can just send endless amounts of explosive drones?

War has no rules. They only tell you that so you think it's okay. When the chips are down, I would do atrocious things to protect my family, including kill someone else's. If you think you are above that you're a fool. War is hell, and he'll doesn't discriminate.

How can you drop an atomic bomb on a whole city and then prosecute some grunts for the My Lai massacre? Tibbets got a medal, William Calley went to jail.

Here is the thing, neither were wrong, what's wrong are people who think war is a game.

There will be eventually, I believe they cannot operate without satellite or 3 cell/data towers ( I imagine they work like agps needing 3 satellites to get close and more the better). I would think the anti ied directional stuff we used to scrabble cell phones in our most recent wars is part of a solution

Just go to the Ukraine or UkrianeConflict subreddits. There is typically new footage daily.

Pretty sure if this footage got more play no one would ever go to war again.

Yep. Rich men with beefs send poor men to settle their differences.

They need people to be rah rah nationalistic to get them to fight.

Time to realize the folks across the border aren't really any different than the rest of us.

The problem is that terrain mapping navigation and image recognition tracking are entirely possible with nothing more than a cell phone processor these days. Those do not have to have GPS satellites.

GPS is the current weakness in the HIMARS rockets. Russia can jam GPS and spoof it too. I have no doubt that DARPA is working on those solutions now thanks to this war's proving ground.

Yeah it was just an example of needing 2-3 separate locations for it to be able to triangulate its own position I think. Whether that’s satellite, air craft, communications towers or dismounts with Los antenna. So i imagine could have three dismount teams or static positions with Los and then they would not need towers, satellites or anything.

So I would guess the focus would be pretty much all freq radio waves disruption but directional so you don’t lose everything.

Or get the time machines thing figured out and give all the soldiers like 1/4 mile emp grenades and just toss em when needed and then stick to ground pound no vehicles radios just binos and gunpowder ha

How well are these drones guarded from theft?

From theft?

They're bought off the shelf or off the internet and jerry-righed with a regular explosives and wires to detonate when it hits something.

A bunch of the FPV videos, you can see the RPG warhead hanging off the bottom and right in front of the camera's view are two pieces of metal in a V-shape. When those two pieces of metal run into something and touch each other...boom.

Eh, I'm torn on this. While it is insane to think it's probably a bunch of 20 year olds blowing people up like it's Call of Duty in a nice enclosed trailer,

There's a movie about this starring Ethan Hawke. It's called Good Kill I think, but it is about him sitting in a Connex box in the Nevada desert remotely piloting reaper drones and he starts to question the ethics of killing people half a world away in the middle east.

Read that close to 1,000 Russians a day are dying by these drones. That's not even counting the ones with severe injuries. Putin is basically sacrificing a whole generation of men to try and get ukraine. Looks like up to 500k killed since war started.

I read that both sides reliance on standard cell towers to operate their drones has magnified their use. Neither side can afford to turn off the towers as they use them as well.

I would imagine the US military’s reliance on secured comm systems would allow for jamming and/or destroying the cell tower system.

Look to Israel and drones are not as effective.

I asked someone close to me that may or may not know about this technology if the US could defeat drones with radio jamming etc. the non answer made me assume we most definitely can.

I would expect fixed locations to have some defense in place. It's too obvious of a vector to not. But anyone out on patrol or on the frontline is vulnerable. Just imagine if they had these when US troops were in Iraq and Afghanistan. IEDs were bad enough and we never really got that footage.
