I have found beer and dark whiskey ruin me now for days. If I drink more than once a month (usually during football games) I feel like shite the next 48 hours.

I've switched to 100% pure blanco tequila and soda --- wake up like a champ now. Which is trouble.

It's not trouble, it's natural.

Those are rookie numbers (3 days a week); ya gotta get those numbers up!

Coffee is for closers. ABC - always be closing.

Sorry, I got sidetracked. Boredom drinking is something I struggle with. I hate cardio exercise, but I’m trying to ride my bike, walk, and lift.

Also, find a way to serve others in some capacity.

I drink heavily now(3 days a week) since my wife passed.

Unless you're downing a fifth 3 days week that isn't that bad, but you will end up drinking every day the way you are going. That's what I did, went from a couple of times a week to every day in a little over a year. I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in April, I'm 53, have not had a drop since. I focused on getting healthy. I've lost a 120lbs and now feel great. I was getting 1800 calories just off beer, I was a Coors banquet and IPA drinker. The only time I've really missed it is when we went to the beach.

(3 days a week)

My dad, before he got really sick (he passed away in 1998), he used to come home with a 6 pack every day and drink while he did stuff he had to do.. or as long as it wasn't cold outside, sit outside and talk with the neighbors, eat supper, take a shower, and when he was finished his last sip he went to bed. On Fridays he would come home with a few tall boys and a case for the weekend so 3 times a day don't really seem that bad. If that's what you like and it doesn't have much of an impact on you... I don't see a problem. But if its just to fill a void, what about some exercise?

We used to live down the road from an older couple and he and his wife would walk every evening (as long as the weather was good). His wife was doing it to make sure he was doing what the doctor told him he needed to do and ole boy would start off with a beer in hand and one in his pocket. But when I was a kid, there used to be a bus driver who owned his own business. He would do his route in the morning, did his work between routes and would bring a small ice chest with him on his route and drink his miller lite ponies.

He retired and no longer had his business and was still driving when things changed with insurance and he was told he could no longer drink while driving in the afternoon. He told them he was done. Looking back to those days, it was know that he loved his ponies and no one ever mentioned "he shouldn't be drinking while driving kids". He had been doing it for so long, he was driving the kids and and I am sure some grandkids of people who used to ride his bus so it was something that was normal.

Find somewhere to go. A coffee shop or something? Somewhere you can interact with people, you never know what will come of it. Any parks around? Any type of low stress part time job you can get? Go to some Vandy home games. Go listen to some live music. Of course you will be more likely to drink, but at least you will not be alone.

Enter sparkling water.
I installed a continuous carbonated water tap in my outdoor kitchen…game changer. A couple big cups of cold club soda will keep me off the usual 2-3 beers, it hydrates instead of dehydrates, and I feel much better the next day.

highly recommend

Those of you with serious replies, thank you. You others go frick yourselves. I wouldn’t wish what I am going through on my worst enemy.

I mean you say you won’t stop fighting for your life with not long to live, you watched your wife slowly die but you drink a lot . Am I missing something here?

Get a hobby. Might I suggest getting a pet of some sort. Aquariums are basically a science experiment in a box of water. Go get a 20 gallon tank, watch some youtube videos on how to cycle it and then go get some fish.

I actually thought about an aquarium and also a red bearded dragon. I ended up siding against it because not having long left to live, it would become someone else’s problem

Some dicklickers and trolls but also some well meaning tough love replies.

Overall: live with a purpose, or be okay not living with much of a purpose - Either one is fine - just don’t live with regret from choosing one when you need the other.

From your post history, You seem like a kindred spirit to myself and many here. Some bad life shite hit you, but enjoy your time in whatever way you need, you deserve it.

I would golf and spend time with the grandkids. Especially if you're headed to Jacksonville.

Do you like to hike? I've done hikes over the years with Nashville Hiking Meet Up. Lots of beautiful parks in the area. A way to meet other people.

PS: I exercise a ton but have gotten into the habit (football is a trigger?) of drinking wine 3-5 times a week. Maybe 3 glasses. Don't drink beer or hard liquor. I get checkups twice/year, and scores are always good, but I like wine. Can't lie.

Can you make the decision one day to not drink alcohol that day and stick with it?

If so, you aren't in trouble. Alcoholics can't stop themselves. They've lost all self control. It doesn't sound like you've done.

My advice: practice discipline by setting goals to not drink alcohol and then accomplish them. 24 hours here, 72 hours there. Skip a whole weekend. Maybe go 5 days.

Do enough to give yourself the confidence that you're still in control and the alcohol isn't.

Also, sorry for your loss.

Why are you saying that? Why don’t you have long to live? You just asked in the money board about whether suicide pays out insurance and now you’re talking about not living long. You need to reach out to someone for help.

My first response in this thread last night was this. I apologize to the OP. I now recall his thread after his wife passed.

I would just say that it's good he sees there might be an issue with his drinking. I guess being aware of it is a good start.

Seen so many friends' lives and families suffer due to alcohol abuse. It's a brutal disease.

Always good to see the support for fellow posters in such threads.

I missed the part where you are dying. If your kids family is busy alot (which I get to an extent), go on vacation. Traveling solo can be rewarding. No one else to consider, just do what you want. Its not like you have to go to Europe, just drive to the nearest national park or go see a game at some stadium you haven't ever been to or really anything that seems like an interesting way to spend your time.
