The Draft House, a downtown beer bar co-owned by former Metro Council member John Delgado, will close at the end of this month.

In a statement posted on the bar’s Facebook page Monday, it was announced that the Draft House would close Oct. 29, after its annual Nightmare on 3rd Street Halloween party. The Draft House opened in late 2014 at 421 Third St.

Delgado blamed the closing on a decrease in business at downtown bars due to a number of factors, including strict enforcement of open container laws and increased competition

I'm sure his tax situation isn't helping.

Yes, that is what is keeping people from going to the bars, because they cant walk the streets with them.

Doubt it, There are probably only 4 decent bars downtown.

He's delinquent on city sales tax right? He blamed it on decreased business but I thought you pay sales tax on items you sell??? So he took the money in but didn't pay the city?

The thread on this over at FDB sounds like the OT. They state that Culcha has taken over downtown after dark and people that actually go in establishments and spend money won't go down there anymore. Does anyone have insight as to this being true?

Given the posted list of “dress codes” at a number of these establishments, I can believe it.

The length and description of prohibited clothes and behavior screams “Culcha clash”.

That's unfortunate. I have never understood why some elements desire to travel across a city just to stand around outside businesses they don't patronize. This happened years back in Shreveport with the area they developed below the bridge and it literally killed the development off within a year. Of course they brought that one on themselves by offering free outdoor entertainment several nights a week.

The same thing happened in Lafayette to some degree 3-4 years ago, ATC shut down some bars on the Northside that catered to a certain element, shortly after that crowd migrated downtown to go to 1-2 bars and loiter outside the rest.

The Drafthouse sale/ownership change was already in the works.

I'm not mentioning the new owners until someone else does. The BR Biz Report didn't mention it neither did yall yet.

It'll be a good new place and well-run I'm figuring.

I get this strange feeling that this has happened before at some point...

This is true only on Saturdays on the stretch of 3rd street between Florida and Laurel.

Really wish Broome didn't torpedo the LSU-Downtown corridor.

From my limited experience, downtown has turned into a hang out for losers.

Lots of broke frickers who can barely afford soup driving around and around the block. Reving up their shitty Camero or Mustang. Blasting rap or R&B. Most of the people hang outside on the sidewalk rather than go inside and spend money. Then there the huge amounts of portly women from Livinsgton and Ascension, who frequent the same places who only go to downtown for the BBC.

I was riding back from the LSU game Sat. night with my father and we had to go downtown to drop me off at my office (where my care was parked). Upon crossing the intersection of Florida and Third my dad, who is 69 years old, blurted out "there are some scroungy looking dogs down here" referring to the downtown clientele. Unfortunately, I couldn't really disagree.

I posted the question below in the FBD thread. Never got an answer about the Varsity.

quote:

I parked downtown Saturday for the game. At 11:00 Saturday night it was very culcha.

That said, when did the Varsity get so much culcha? The demographics of the crowd outside the Varsity saturday night wasn't what it used to be. When did it shift?
