And no way in hell those staff members "accidentally" accessed that chart. Like it's been mentioned...EPIC can trace every single click you make in a chart.

I have to go through numerous patient charts everyday for infection control surveillance. Still freaks me out when I get a break the glass alert. Even if I legit need to be in the chart I still am super cautious.


It isn't just celebrities you need to watch it on. You cannot access your own records or that of family or coworkers just for the heck of it. One of my coworkers...his gf was in the hospital. Our department had to access her chart to do our job. My coworker couldn't touch her chart, I had to do it. Even then...I made sure I only accessed the parts of her chart that I absolutely had to (labs, etc) to do my reviews. Cause I knew IT would be closely looking at what I was clicking on.


Those employees in the original story deserve to lose their jobs. You go over HIPAA rules when hired and every single year as an employee. They can also face criminal and civil charges.

I’m just saying that I have to break the glass to access the chart for a valid reason. I know I have to....but it still freaks me out when I see the break the glass alert Sometimes you know why the alert is there, most times you don’t and are like “why is this chart flagged?”

I never access charts unless I need to for my job...sorry if you misunderstood.

I have to access deceased people’s charts all the time for documentation required by our department. I quickly get the info I need and get the hell out of the chart cause I know some of those will be closely monitored by IT.

I never saw the BTG alert until I was in my current job though. When I was at the bedside never saw that.


So the first time I saw it I did kinda internally be like like "wtf" and just asked my coworkers what that meant.


Speaking of EPIC...We are FINALLY gonna get the EPIC infection control module (Bugsy) sometime this year. Never seen a demo of it...just been told it's wonderful. (And expensive)

I’m not in the medical field at all but one of my pet peeves is calling all of them ‘nurses’. I’d assume that most of the time these firings are Cna’s or LPN’s and not RN’s?

Yeah I don't even know why people waste their time becoming an LPN now. Unless you only want to work at a nursing home or a crappy hospital.

Most reputable hospitals don't want the hassle of hiring LPNs. Hospitals won't receive certain statuses(that help with their reimbursement) if they hire LPNs.


My hospital used to hire them and when I was on the floor it was kind of a pain in the arse having them on the floor. As an RN, you had to give some of their meds for them and sign off some of their charting every shift.
