They have to replace the 70+ year old foundation for the elevated section of highway in Baton Rouge. That’s why they have to cut it down to 1 lane. It’s not simply a widening project unfortunately. Would be a lot easier if it was.

Needs to happen. Wish there was a way to keep from closing so much of the highway.

The idiots at DOTD know roads and bridges don’t last forever. They’ve known that stretch of road would eventually have to be replaced. If they weren’t collective retards they would have built alternate routes for the last 20 years in preparation for this day.

I would think Highway 90 is going to see a huge increase in traffic.

Finishing I-49 to New Orleans would have been one of them. Along with a loop around Baton Rouge that includes a new bridge.

With what money? The change in the couch cushions? Unfortunately, they already spent that on duct tape for for the thousands of deficient bridges.

Remember 3 months ago when the legislature balked at setting aside a quarter of the money needed to build a new bridge in BR?

The state has spent more than enough their money plus federal dollars over the last quarter century.

Blame your elected officials for pushing for and funding that bridge.

Okay, I'll bite. Where did they spend the $1.5B-$3B you need to do the work you're proposing?

Don't see too many liberals critical of JBE even though he's in the same position.

JBE is getting off easy right now.

He was implicated in a cover up of the beating death of a black guy in N La. He was supposed to testify in front of the legislature, but dodged it somehow. I guess that black life didn’t matter.

He had also looked bad in the Juvenile Justice debacle. I watched as his department head stated he wasn’t doing a good job at a podium right in front of JBE. The problems still exist with the juve prisons and the guy still has his job.

And then there are the Dept of Family and Children Services. Their inaction caused the death of a two year old and sexual abuse of kids by a blatant sex offender given foster care duties.

These are three areas where liberals are usually active, but they have been mostly silent about the governor’s handling of these three departments.

Anyone willing to put money on this plan being finished in a year?

I’m putting the over/under at 20 months

They need to get the guy that built the Hoover Dam to oversee this project. That massive project was finished on time. Whatever it takes!

They've had the money, they've just put it into other projects with lower priorities. Just look at the locations they've narrowed down to for putting the next bridge as a gauge of their decision-making.

Their ruling out of the Brusly-Addis corridor in favor of such a further southern route basically kills that bridge's ability to be part of a worthwhile southern loop for the area.

Don't get me wrong, there will still be a benefit which will draw at least some traffic out of BR, but it will be negligible for likely a loooong time (ie: if the population movement shifts to move along whatever new corridor is created/expanded to facilitate travel from the bridge to BR).

I can’t understand why he doesn’t get heat for this. There is evidence in text messages that he knew about it the night it happened. He kept his mouth shut over a year while LSP lied to the public.

I think it could work if there's a link from the bridge to I-10 somewhere east of Grosse Tete. Maybe eventually a link to US 190.

I'm assuming that LA30 will be upgraded on the east side of the river.

Yes. And if you live in Zachary, Livingston, Ascension, or the Felicianas, you can get to it without ever having to get onto I-10

so you are saying none of them will feel the traffic this is gonna cause? because..... I dont believe you.

I used to think it could work as well, but the more I look at the geography, it's simply too far south for any to use it other than traffic with either originating or destination points west of the region and the other being anywhere from around Prairieville to New Orleans. That's not a majority of the 110-12 corridor traffic, that's not even a majority of the passthrough traffic.

With the current estimated locations of the next bridge, a loop from 10-12 using that bridge would add an extra 15-ish miles to a trip going from just west of Lobdell to Livingston over going straight through BR. By comparison, both the 220 in Shreveport and 210 in Lake Charles add only about 3 miles.

For it to really be worthwhile it would work far better going through the Brusly/Addis corridor, this would add only ~4 miles to the trip (putting it in line with the other two loops in the state).

I think that's part of the plan, if not it should be. At the very least it would give much more access to LSU to folks coming from south of the city, plus for those from across the river. This means that traffic doesn't have to come into the city.
