Doomsday Vault Floods....That's Disturbing

WEll, that was unexpected.
Guess they didn't expect the permafrost to melt this quickly. Not living up to the PERMA part of its name.

A seed vault in the Arctic that's supposed to preserve the world's food supply for hundreds of years was partially flooded in recent months, and one of the reasons it was built in the first place is believed to be the culprit. The Global Seed Vault, located on Norway's Spitsbergen Island, took on water during the winter because of melting permafrost, according to the Guardian. As the Arctic continues to set record highs, the permafrost was pushed above the melting point, and water seeped into the vault which is built into a mountain, the report added.

he vault is built to survive natural disasters and nuclear war, but the winter's permafrost melt has left scientists scrambling for ideas to keep the meltwater out. As global warming accelerated in recent decades, the Arctic warmed faster than the rest of the planet, and that trend is expected to continue. Vault managers have started to dig trenches to keep the meltwater out of the entrance tunnel, and they're performing other waterproofing measures as well. They're hopeful they can keep the vault from flooding if the permafrost melt is the new normal, and they're determined to do whatever is necessary to protect the seeds.

Man, could they have possibly done a shittier job of building that doomsday vault?

Not having it in the Arctic would be a pretty easy solution

Sounds like we don't even need a vault anymore. Just grow the shite outside.

Yeah, you would think they would make it a bit more convenient...or put it on a continent with a few more people.
fricking Norwegians want an all white world.

Build a doomsday vault in the ice and it getting wet when the ice melts...that's like opening a rehab center on Bourbon Street...what could possibly go wrong.

What do you expect from a government construction contract?

Here is a pic of the vault in the summer...
Also, it is reported that the actual flooding was caused by a combo of snow melt and rain that ran through the front doors.

A smart way to build into a mountain and not worry about flooding is to have the entrance at the base... And everything else at a higher elevation.
But hey.. Logic has no place here.

You would still have seepage through the roof that would get everything wet, it would just have better drainage.

So its a "vault" but it cant hold back melt water? What kind of fricking vault door is this?

Shouldn't have used concrete, should have used Norwegian Wood.

"Low Bid" selection - no doubt.
When does that ever work?

They should have called for and properly installed waterstops. Those hippies should have hired a better engineer.
