This is one of the first frames of the Uber dashcam video where Elaine Herzberg is visible. Notice that you can faintly see a white sign to the far right of the image. This sign is much more clearly visible in videos taken by YouTubers.

When police released footage from the Uber vehicle's onboard camera on Wednesday, it seemed to somewhat support this view. In the video, Herzberg's feet become visible only about 1.4 seconds before the final frame of the video. Prior to that point, she appears shrouded in shadow.

But then people in the Tempe area started making their own videos—videos that give a dramatically different impression of that section of roadway.

In this nighttime video, posted to YouTube by Brian Kaufman on Wednesday, the scene of the crash can be seen around 0:33. Features at the sides of the road—including curbs, signs, and bushes—are clearly visible. No pedestrians walk into the road during the video, but it seems clear that Herzberg would have been visible much earlier if the Uber video had been taken with this camera.

different cameras can show images differently in low light. And certainly much better than the human eye. I'd be much more interested in the other sensors and what they were registering. those are what should have stopped the uber. not some dash camera and and the riders texting on their phone.

The second one is so bright it seems like you barely need headlights. Did the crash happen at 3:00 in the afternoon?

I mean you can just faintly see the glare from the headlights on the road.

I want my self driving truck. Screw pedestrians. Stay out of the road.

One thing that is definitely clear from the second image is that no way in hell should a pedestrian be crossing the road there.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if both videos are intentionally skewed, just with opposite sensitivity.

That said, the car's LIDAR should have noticed anyway.

Careful street hawk, you're gonna get down voted by the robot car idiots on here.

No way man, like that car was infallible and no human could have seen that pedestrian ever!!!111!!

Robots are better!! Uber is my God now!

Like that woman was breaking the law and shite and deserved to be killed by a robot car that never braked or slowed down.

Humans are dumb cattle anyway.

Whole lot of stupid on the OT. Next time it may be a little boy running out in the street after a ball.

That's the 1st and only pedestrian accident involving an atomous vehicle.

There were nearly 6,000 pedestrian deaths in 2016 involving vehicles driven by humans.

And 2017 coming in 5,984 deaths a 27% increase since 2007.

They sure are. The one in this story walked out in front of a car she should have seen.

and the car equipped with supposedly 173 kinds of radar lidar and other sensors should have seen her.

Me too. Self driving vehicles obviously have a long way to go but why wouldn’t people want them. Most people are on their phones anyway. Just this week I saw 3 people holding their phone up and FaceTiming.

Traffic would be better, there would be less accidents. It’ll just take some time.

Your statistical analysis is incomplete and only tells part of the story. You need to know the total number of human driven cars and the total number of autonomous cars for that stat to be relavent. If there is one autonomous car for every 10,000 regular cars then your stats tell a different story.

Go check out the link, there are more still shots. Try it yourself. At 40mph with street lights and headlights, large objects don't just appear.

As sad as this is, hopefully, it will serve the greater good of shitcanning self-driving cars.

Oh, I know it's a fool's hope. Must humans under 35 are more than willing to cede control of their lives to technology.
