Any time someone says the pres should be chosen via popular vote, they very quickly remind us that we are a republic rather than a democracy. My facebook feed is full of maps talking about "this is why the EC is important", as if land is more important than people. And the suggestion that the majority should dictate the rules is described as "mob rule". You've been trained to think of the majority as a "mob", and you never question why the minority should have more power.
