My three daughters went to Dominican about 15 years ago. I can tell you the main reason for low enrollment is that the administration has sucked all of the fun out of it. They will be out of business if they can’t make themselves more appealing to students.

I have a daughter that goes there and this is the chatter I hear amongst my wife and her friends. Apparently, Mt Carmel is a lot more laid-back and more fun overall. Plus the academic side doesn’t have a strict reputation from what I understand. I know my daughters friends that go to Mt Carmel have a lot less homework.

That alone makes it a pretty easy decision for a lot of girls. You can choose the fun school with less work, and a good reputation. Or you can choose more work and less fun and a school with a good reputation.

You pay $12k a year for homeowners?

No man, you misunderstood what I said, our home owners insurance is a little over 1k a year and has stayed the same in price, our wind and hail jumped up.

I was just saying that there are better options in the city if you can afford it. Didn’t think it was that hard to understand.

you got two out of four

Private school enrollment is very high. Newman, Country Day, St Martin’s are full, even as annual tuitions and fees crack 30k.

Crime factor is an added excuse, not the reason people leave
People’s main reason for leaving is usually monetary.
Free public schools, housing costs, insurance costs, better pay, are reason people leave, NOLA cost of living is high.

I don't think Mt Carmel has the same academic reputation Dominican has for the exact reasons you mentioned. Dominican is widely considered as a more challenging environment.

I'm not sure I would electively spend more money on tuition based on the less work and being easier in the classroom.

Another reason we chose DHS. My daughter actually likes structure and discipline. She thrives in it.

MCA and DHS are both great schools that offer different experiences. The kids that go to DHS tend to be more academically motivated. That doesn’t mean MCA doesn’t do a fine job, but there are definitely differences.

Plus, the brown school has been getting their asses kicked in athletics by DHS lately.

how high on the priority crime falls (as compared to a myriad of other shite) is strictly personal and changes from person to person.

I went there in the 70s - it was not for the rich or preppy. It was mostly kids from blue collar families. Tons of St Bernard parish kids. Was always one of the least expensive Catholic schools.

.

The insanity of NOLA girls schools. I would literally not allow my kid to go to a school that is popular because it's less rigorous and "more fun". But again, it's all clique-y girl bullsite in that city.

Of course we are in a recession

Link?
It's interesting that no one has posted a single link claiming the U.S. is currently in a recession.

I'm not claiming there won't be a recession (there's ALWAYS a recession sometime in our future) but with GDP growing 2.0% and 2.4% the last two quarters, we are definitely NOT in a recession yet. LINK

Why do so many posters hope the U.S. is in a recession now?

As Mr. Spock would say to Captain Kirk, "Fascinating..."

My daughter started at a coed school in Kindergarten and stayed until she wanted to switch to MCA for her Freshman and Sophomore years, she had enough of that all girls bullshite

She’s back at her coed school for her Junior and Senior years

I have a few nieces that went to Haynes but that whole magnet thing is a bit foreign to me. Are those legit alternatives?

100% agree

I can understand reasoning behind choosing MCA over Dominican but being less challenging isn't one of them

When you say "better options" what do you mean?

Academically, Dominican is probably one of the toughest girl schools in the state.

It is crazy but I’m not sure what else to do except play the game if you live in the city. I mean there are a few places that charge $20k a year for kindergarten and grade school. It’s crazy to think that after donations a family could spend over $500k to get their kid ready for college

As someone not from New Orleans, when I saw that there was a "controversy" over Justice Barrett then I knew that the school was messed up.

How can honoring a Supreme Court Justice that's an alum be controversial?

And while this incident is likely not a factor in the school's downward slide, it is evidence of greater issues that likely are the problem.
