Dollar General’s aggressive pricing drives locally owned grocery stores out of business, replacing shelves stocked with fresh fruit, vegetables and meat with the kinds of processed foods underpinning the country’s obesity and diabetes crisis.

The one in Clinton is in a former Walmart Neighborhood Market and they have fresh produce and meat.

But I've loved going there for years. They have the same basic prices as Walmart on toilet paper, sodas, etc., without the hassle.

That's the first one I ever went to. A lot of times I go there and Brian's, Brian's has the fresh food and DG has "everything" else at "half" what Brian's charges and you never have to leave the parking lot to go between them. With the pharmacy across the street, you basically have a Walmart in a 100 yard radius.

There is a chain that tried this. I think it was called Fred’s and they even tried to buy a pieces of the Rite Aid that wasn’t bought buy Walgreens.

I’ve never seen a Fred’s pharmacy, but supposedly it’s similar to CVS and Walgreens, and nicer than their dollar stores.

However, the name “Fred’s” carries a stigma of a dollar store. They constantly ran into opposition from local communities and neighborhoods when applying for zoning and building permits for new locations. People thought a dollar store was being built next door.

They should open earlier and have a kitchen area. I'd buy/eat breakfast there in the middle of nowhere. Crack open a hot pocket or spaghetti O's.
There's always a dollar general.

It won't be long before the workers unionize.

They are putting them where there is nothing for 30 miles. It is literally bringing people out of the woodwork.

They built one in Baton Rouge near Tiger Bend and Jones Creek. That is hardly the middle of nowhere.

Every single one isn’t in the middle of nowhere.

I wish they'd pop some more stores open by truck stops - it's kinda nice to go in there to buy some household stuff and not have the 300% markup like the truckstops charge. Example - sip cup of campbells soup was nearly $5 at the TA in Boise, ID today. It's friggin ridiculous.

I’ve owned Dollar General stock since 2015. It’s a very well run company.

Bought in 2009. Very well ran. They also carry Lemonheads which cannot be found at WM

I generally would agree with you but I'v recently found it useful when I'm traveling esp if I want a single use product.

Fake news.. They ain't half bad though.

There are 6 DG's in the city limits of Selma and 2 more less than 10 miles outside. 2 of these are within a mile of one another in Selmont, a rough area. One of these 2, has a roll down metal barrier they lock down at night. It also used to have a security guard during the day.
