Dog vomiting every 2-3 months

I’ve got a damn good dog except for this vomiting problem. We will switch his food when it happens and will be good for a couple of months then right back to it. Around the same time he will lose hair around the butt and his ears get a little irritated. Sounds like classic food allergies to me which is why we started changing the food. However it always comes back when we switch. I’ve never tried the same food twice. (Purina One, Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach, currently on Taste of the Wild)

I vomit every 2-3 months.
I also drink profusely every 2-3 months.

No, it’s a small yard and he’s inside except when he uses the bathroom or for walks.

My dog has had similar issues in the past and we figured out it was a beef allergy. Switched him to Purina Lamb and Rice and he is much better.

Yeah we dropped over a grand the first time when it got real bad. Had him checked for everything they could. Still kept going, we changed food and it went away...for a while at least.
I’ll have to check again but I’m pretty sure there’s no beef in the current food.

My dog was having a similar problem. We first checked for worms. We eventually figured out she was eating poisonous plants in the yard.

Hair loss on tail: Hypothyroidism.
Vomiting every few weeks: Retained corn cob, finally thrown up after a year. It was pretty gross.

The only thing I’ve got planted in the back are canna lillies which aren’t toxic to dogs.
Damn!
Edit: now that I think about it, the only thing they didn’t do was x-ray to check for a blockage.

I would agree. Ears n Rears is classic food allergy
What type of heartworm prevention/flea prevention you giving? This is often flavored and can trigger food allergy in some dogs.
Joint supplement? Omega fatty acid/fish oils? Vitamins? Often these are flavored.
How bout that huge rawhide bone? Any tablescraps at all?? Yes, even a little bit counts. Think of kids with peanut allergies - doesn't take much.
You may need to get this dog on a Rx diet specifically made for this purpose.

This sounds like my dog exactly. We switched him to Diamond Care Sensitive Skin Formula a few weeks ago and he hasn't vomited since (he'd gotten to the point of vomiting every day). He doesn't scratch much anymore either.
Are you still giving your dog treats or other food? I talked to the guy at a local pet/feed store and he said we needed to do at least 60 days straight of no other food or treats in order to be sure about an allergy. That's what we're doing and it's working well so far.

Mine does that every so often. Pretty sure he ate charcoal a couple weeks ago. It wasn't pretty.

A good point here. If he's just losing the hair there are considerations like hypothyroid. I assumed he meant the dog was chewing hair around the tail.

Reminds me of a stupid story with our basset. When she was young she would eat socks then puke them up later so we had to make sure we kept the laundry room door closed, fixed the problem. Then one day I am walking the dogs and my neighbor comes over to talk to me about something and the basset decides to drop a deuce and I look over and she has crapped out a pair of my wife's underwear...

We have him on Heartguard and Nexus. Used to be on Trifexis until he got to the point of throwing that up almost immediately every time.
Zero table scraps. No rawhide. Damn dog will throw up a piece of ice 30 seconds later if he gets it.
Before we put him on the Taste of the Wild he was also losing hair around the groin/stomach and it got real red and irritated. That hasn’t happen this time though.

Sometimes to nail it down for sure we have to switch dogs to topical flea and heartworm prevention for a couple months. Something to potentially talk with your vet about. If you were going to go to all that trouble I'd do the Rx diet just to get the answer - then if confirmed seek out OTC alternative diets like the taste of the wild.

Is there any medication that the dog gets every 2-3 months? I know some people space flea medicine out to about that time. If not, it could be the changing of the seasons combined with a food allergy.

Our old dog did this, and she lived to be 15. She used to eat inappropriate things outside when she went out through the doggy door while we were at work.
