When we got our most recent dog our beagle had issues with it and would start fights. The dominance method works. I've pinned both down and they really don't get out of line. The beagle is a lemon beagle so it's taller than most and is very strong. I grabbed it's snout and basically held its mouth shut until it finally chilled out. May be harder with a chow.

Every time he sleeps, pop a paper bag real loud. Do it close but not in his ear. Make sure you have a rolled up towel handy, in his view.

Every time he pulls a stunt, snap his arse with the towel. The combination of the loud noise from the bag, plus the towel will have him questioning his desire to be a tool.

Be sure and carry the towel when he goes out to pee, just as a friendly reminder. If he tries to bite you, tase him.

Every time you have to towel snap him, the GF gets a spanking for putting you in this bad situation with her evil dog. Posting video is obligatory.

Run that bastard till he's panting his arse off then make him do what you want.

Good advice.

Always easier to train a dog after he has been allowed to play etc.

And a breed specific link as well

Chows

Research before diving in with alpha rolling a potentially aggressive dog.

I still say hard to go wrong with teaching a proper "heel" to start with. The dog learns to follow your commands and learns you are the leader in less volatile situations.

Of course it works but it's not as potentially amusing as op's plan.

Follow the steps.....
1) Take baseball bat and beat Chow to death.
2) Bury Chow in backyard
3) Tell GF, Chow was hit by a car and died
4) Come home with new Lab puppy the next day.
5) Problem solved.

I use to raise rottweilers, and cattle a hot shot works well on cows and even better on dogs.

Feed the dog and put his bowl on the ground, then don't let him eat until you say to. After a few seconds of him eating tell him to stop and take his food, or just take the food straight up. If he even growls a little, put that fricker in his place with the quickness.

You should start doing this when they are puppies so it will take some work now.

Well...my lab got me arrested last week.

110lb English Lab with the block head. Typical Lab...everyone is his friend according to him.

Recently, he has learned how to escape our underground fence so until I can retrain him I have been leaving him leashed to his dog house while we are at work.

Police contact me last week and he has drug his dog house across my yard, house catches on a tree, leash is just long enough for him to sit in my neighbor's driveway...neighbor calls cops and presses charges. So I get a ticket for "Allowing dog to run at large"

ETA: I live on 3 acres in rural Alabama...outside of city limits but within police jurisdiction.

Neighbor's 2 houses down were outside doing yardwork and that is where he was trying to go. They love the dog and came over and explained to the police and other neighbor what was going on and offered to bring the dog back across to my property. The next door neighbor would hear nothing of it.

I'll try the holding down method. Will do it when the g/f is not around.

You probably need to wait until the G/F is around so she can dial 911 for your arse. Establishing pecking order between yourself and a 70 lb Chow Chow, that already shot one across your bow about his food is not wise. You will loose this fight every time. He's most likely already pissed about you fricking his mamma.

Damn, this thread is still going. Been busy at work so I have not had a chance to see the dog in a couple of days. I talked to my g/f yesterday and I told her my plan. She said that the dog will not let me hold him down but he will let her. Next thing I hear is a growl through the phone and my g/f shouting. I asked what happened and she said she was holding him down on his back for 5 seconds and he "nipped her on the forearm". I said "he bite you". She said nip. We went back in forth over this term and she was getting upset. She knows I grew up in the country and I am much more harsh then she is. When a dog bites the next step is a bullet in the head but again this is not my dog. She sent me a picture and her forearm is red but there is no blood. I guess he was just struggling to get up and nipped her. This morning the dog did to her exactly what he has been doing to me. Would not come back to the house when she called him. She had to chase him now.

Going over there tomorrow while my g/f is at work. Will hold his arse down and make him summit. Then take him for a walk and make him walk in the middle of the street not sniffing anything. He will be downwind of me smelling my high protein diet. Probably will do the staring contest later that night and take his feeding bowl away during feeding time. All great suggestions that are non-violent.

damn dude you need to consult with real professionals on how to become the pack leader. Holding the dog down is not beneficial.

Read online, watch youtube videos. Pack dogs with nip at the pack leader even if they feel threatened, as in getting held down.

t's totally PC now. That Mexican Chihuahua Cesar does it.
no he doesnt. I love his show. He shows his dominance to become the pack leader but not by holding a dog down.

Well I know you were looking for non violent suggestions, but this worked for me:

Room mate brought over a chow mix that he was watching for the weekend. It was very aggressive, but he could back it down if it was growling or barking at me. He went to the gym (leaving the dog home) and my GF came over. When she walked in the door the dog started growling and barking very aggressively at her. I used the same tone and words he did to try to get it to back off but it turned and began barking and growling at me. I immediately did my best Tom Dempsey impersonation and kicked the dog with everything I had right underneath it's chin...it damn near cut a back flip then scurried off to my roommates room while sneaking glances at me. That dog wouldn't even so much as look at me for the rest of the weekend.

Not sure if that means I became the "alpha", but I sure as hell didn't have to put up with it's shite anymore

This method ALWAYS works. Then the dog will eventually try to warm up to you. Then it will accept you as alpha. People have been doing it for years.

How do you think our ancient ancestors eventually tamed the canines? Control of food and violent oppression when they got out of line.

Some things never change.

But you might have to actually be willing to kill it. Any dog that bites me hard, I'm willing to kill.
