What these dogs are capable of doing is amazing. Auburn has a training program for dogs called "vapor wake." The dogs are able to detect if an explosive material has been moved through an area, even if it was several hours before.

It is pretty amazing what dogs can do. I just have no idea what they are smelling. A microSD card can't have a significant scent to it IMO.

I guess all electronics though when new have that "new electronic" smell but after use it fades away.

They train dogs in prison to sniff out cell phones. Same concept.

Dogs that are properly trained, from a reliable program, are awesome.
(Dogs are awesome anyway).

My problem with the original post is that people will read that and think every dog is infallible.
Unfortunately, dogs, being so eager to please, will alert when they sense their handlers want them to.
"Well Boudreaux alerted so we need to search y'all's vee-hickle...."

We would all hope that an FBI dog is well-trained and handled correctly and I am sure he is.

That is not the case with the majority of police dogs you see on a local level. Unless it has very recently changed, there is no training standard for drug-sniffing dogs used by local and state departments. In many cases, the handler trained the dog.
