Dog Shooting Question

Let's say I'm out on my afternoon walk, with my licensed "concealed carry" (as the gun lovers like to describe it). I walk in front of a home, while in the street, and a large aggressive looking dog runs out from the side yard and charges me. When do I have the legal right to shoot it?
I'm not a cop, but I would seriously like to know.

Unleashed dog is running at you? I am no legal expert but I would.

Well... Gun lovers is the wrong term here. I don't love guns but am not naive enough to believe it's not needed in today's society.
Hell my wife hates guns but is comforted by the fact that I carry everywhere.
Secondly, yes, you can shoot him.
But you have to be prepared for the legal battle that ensues from the owner of the pet.
Then again, if you have bite marks or injuries you can easily move on.
Gun should be the last resort though.

Cities have leash laws for a reason.

I always turn to the OT for legal advice.

Seems like a great repository, allegedly. :)

well if all my dog does is run at you and bark, without attacking you or otherwise harming you, and you shoot him, I can assure you you will receive overwhelming, suppressing, return fire from me. (given I am in the area to witness the event).
If you are too scared, stupid, or ill equipped to negotiate a dog confronting you without resorting to lethal force (as an absolute last resort), I have no option but to remove you from the gene pool as you are so intellectually weak as to be a threat to the rest of us who are not flummoxed by simple encounters as the one you describe.

Same thing happened to me but I was pulling a wagon with my 3 year old and 18 month old.
Luckily the guy was standing there in his garage and started yelling stop aggressively and the dog coward in the driveway halfway between he and I. The owner had a few friends standing around that started ragging on him telling him to get his dog under control.
The guy apologized, but I now walk with a pistol.
It was a blue female pit if that matters...

You're good. You get bonus points for pit bulls.

not badass, just not willing to put up with people who cannot negotiate the simplest confrontation. since the OP didn't specify the breed, I'll assume its just a GR, lab or some other really "dangerous" breed. If this guy can't figure out how to ward off a barking dog- not attacking- then he probably can't handle much else in life. Its a dog. Mailmen and old people walk around every day and can handle this sans lethal force. Try carrying a broom stick or pepper spray if your afraid some hell hound is going to eat you.

Thats what it is called, a concealed carry permit, CCP for short... We "gun lovers" didn't make this term up

Well, that depends...

Trust me, I would never resort to lethal means in defense from a dog. In fact, I pretty much feel the same way.
I happen to have a scar on my leg from a few years ago when a neighbor's catahoula grabbed hold of it as I was walking up to their house. He still runs at me on occasion if he sees me jogging by and happens not to be in his pen.
My point is that I just don't understand why these incidents keep happening with cops. Are they just that short fused? Scared? Dumb? Why can't part of this wonderful training that they go thru include a couple hours of "How to defend against a canine without a gun."
This shite is pissing me off.

You would kill someone over a dog? That's just stupid

it would matter to me. the biggest factor is your kids though. I'd have no problem if you shot the dog at that point. I'd blame the owner for the dog's death.
