Messed it up really bad, but didn’t kill it. I removed it from my yard and dumped it in a storm drain, barely alive, hoping it would die quickly. It honestly bummed me out but I wanted it gone.

Poor thing had lost a lot of blood. Anyone know how long a badly wounded possum can hang on?

I regret not putting it out of its misery, but without any real knowledge of how much “fight” these animals have, I was afraid beating it repeatedly with a shovel would make it suffer even more.

You were going to beat it with a shovel to “put it out of its misery?”

Well, kill it and put it out of its misery

One well placed and strong plunge on the neck with the blade will finish it. What are you waiting for?

Let your dog finish the job. It probably has bigger balls than you anyway.

Our dog chases them every night. He's yet to catch one because they get on my fence.

The thought briefly crossed my mind.

No. Not on principle or anything. Just hadn’t given gun ownership much thought.

This makes me think of a dog I had in my teens. I'd catch possums in traps and shoot them with a .22 in the chest. Then I'd open the trap and let the wounded possum run out and that damn dog would tear into it. You could hear the spine crunching as he would bite it. He fricking loved killing those things.

RIP Scamper.

Our dog recently devoured a baby possum, and then proceeded to regurgitate it in the middle of our garage

This is a great reason to have at least one.

In this instance you’re probably not wrong. And she’s female.

I had possums living under my house last year. I beat a baby nightly with my shovel until i ran out of possums.

There's an old saying that goes "He's as scared of me as a possum an axe handle!"

A pellet gun would even do the trick. I probably wouldn't shoot anything more than that in my neighborhood.

OP just go whack it with the shovel.

He dumped it in a storm drain. It is no longer in a very whackable position.
